The distinction certifies the excellence of the municipality's sports activities and facilities.
Agüimes has become the first municipality in the Canary Islands with less than 50.000 inhabitants to obtain the Quality Seal of the Sports System, a certification granted by the colleges of graduates in Physical Education that accredits the excellence of the sports facilities, activities and services that the institution makes available to citizens. Specifically, the Agüimes City Council has obtained the three-star rating, the maximum possible within this quality certification, in recognition of both the municipal sports management and its two reference aquatic facilities, the Agüimes Municipal Swimming Pool and the Cruce de Arinaga Hydrotherapy Center.
The three badges were delivered this Friday to the mayor of Agüimes, Óscar Hernández, by the vice president of the Official College of Graduates in Physical Education of the Canary Islands (COLEF), José María García Aranda, in an event that was also attended by the current councilor of Sports of the City Council, Alberto Santana, and his predecessor in office, Carmen Rosa Guedes. To receive this Quality Seal of the Sports System, the Agüimes City Council had to pass a rigorous audit that verified in situ the characteristics and degree of conservation of the facilities, the level of user satisfaction, the quality in the organization of the different sporting events and the professionalism of the sporting services offered to the population, among many other aspects.
With nearly 32.000 inhabitants, the municipality of Agüimes has 91 sports facilities spread throughout all the neighborhoods, adding up to a total of 217.910 square meters, 6,8 m2 of sports surface per person, one of the highest ratios in the Canary Islands. This year, the City Council will allocate 2,6 million euros to the Sports area, which represents 6,2% of the municipal budget, above the recommendation of 5% that sports management professionals themselves make through COLEF.
Among the challenges for the future, the City Council is already planning the complete remodeling of the Municipal Swimming Pool in the town, the creation of a new weight room and gym next to the Arinaga Sports Center and the completion of the circuit of bio-healthy parks in all neighborhoods, among others. investments. It is also planned to continue increasing financial support for clubs and athletes, as well as providing greater accessibility and sustainability to all the municipality's sports facilities.
