Spar Gran Canaria invests 1,79 million euros to improve the energy efficiency of its stores
The SPAR Gran Canaria group continues working to be a benchmark company in terms of sustainability in the Canary Islands, promoting actions that reinforce its environmental protection policy. Among these initiatives, the chain maintains its commitment, year after year, to the modernization of its facilities. Thus, the SPAR Gran Canaria group invested 1,79 million euros last 2023 to activate measures that optimize energy efficiency in 11 of its points of sale.
Among these improvements, carried out in the 8 stores that the group renovated last year, were the renovations of the central cold systems, thus optimizing energy consumption; the change to electronic labels, which encourage paper savings; the installation of state-of-the-art vertical cold furniture; and the replacement of lighting fixtures with low-consumption LEDs. A set of actions in which more than 1 million euros were invested to promote energy efficiency and contribute to the reduction of the carbon footprint. This commitment to developing more efficient and respectful supermarkets was also carried out in the three new points of sale opened in 2023, SPAR Bahía Feliz, SPAR Taliarte and SPAR Puerto Azul, with an investment of more than 710.000 euros.

The self-consumption of renewable energy is another of the initiatives to care for the environment for which the Canarian supermarket chain will renew its commitment in 2024. After completing the expansion of one of its solar energy generating plants last year, the SPAR group Gran Canaria achieved a notable increase of 25% in self-consumption thanks to the energy generated through the solar plants located in its logistics centers, which have more than 5.000 photovoltaic modules.
SPAR Gran Canaria will maintain these lines of action this year to benefit sustainability, continuing to improve energy efficiency in the upcoming openings and renovations of its stores. In addition, the chain has already begun to develop a new project to continue increasing self-consumption of renewable energy at the entrance to its logistics center in El Goro through the installation of a canopy with photovoltaic panels, which will generate energy savings while providing of a shaded space for vehicles.
