Fun and color will flood the streets of Agüimes Casco this Saturday with the beginning of the 'Arabian Nights' Carnival. The carnivals started like every year with the celebration of the Inaugural Parade, which had as its starting point the parking lots of the Municipal Swimming Pool. From there a dozen floats began their journey alongside the presence of various murgas and carnival groups from the municipality, which paraded to the rhythm of the drums of the Makana batucada and the lively dances of the Aragüimé troupe.
All the Agüimes murguero groups participated in the parade, including Flokis and The Mokis, Las Inkietas, Los Guanchones, Vete por Así, Las Miruflinas, Los Hijos de Chano el Negro, Ni Quito ni Pongo, Las Salamandras, Los Lagartos, Los Lagartitos, Lady's Lagartos, Los Pachachos, Los Sombreritos, Las Charanguillas and Los Serenquenquitos. It was also attended by the group of the recently formed Escuelita Murguera, members of the Tabaiba Association and the Association of Uruguayans in Gran Canaria.
The happy and festive atmosphere invited neighbors and visitors to join in a great hubbub that began with the Burning of the Spirit of the Lizard on the façade of the City Hall building. From his entrance, the mayor of Agüimes, Óscar Hernández, dedicated a few words to Don Carnal, as has been a tradition for years.

From this weekend until February 25, the municipality will experience a carnival inspired by the stories of one of the great classics of universal literature, 'The Thousand and One Nights'. Dressed as Sinbad the Sailor, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, Scheherazade or Aladdin, carnival-goers will be able to enjoy an extensive programme, which includes notable events such as the 40th edition of the Agüimes Murgas Contest, which will be held on the 6th, 7th and February 9 in the Plaza del Rosario.
Also, this year's carnivals will include three days of Day Carnivals, which will take place on February 10, 17 and 24 in Arinaga, Agüimes Casco and Cruce de Arinaga, respectively. Another of the relevant events in the program are the World Carnival meetings, which will take place in the Plaza de Rosario on Thursday, February 15 and Friday, February 16, with murga choir workshops, carnival lyrics or carnival makeup and the performances of the 'Chirigota del Sheriff', crier this year at the Cádiz Carnival, and the Uruguayan murga 'Metele que son Pasteles', one of the most famous at the Montevideo Carnival.
