The Children of Chano el Negro achieved this Friday, for the second consecutive year, the first prize for interpretation at the Agüimes Murgas Contest thanks to a brilliant performance that won the favor of the public and the members of the jury in the fortieth edition of this contest. . Disguised as vampires, the 'Chanos' went out on stage in search of new victims to feed on and, with their usual spark and good humor, criticized other specimens from the municipality who were equally specialists in the art of sucking blood. With large doses of irony and good humor, they concluded their performance by asking the people not to allow blood to be drawn, unless their destiny is to save lives through donation. The double meaning of their verses helped them not only win the contest but also to obtain the Paco Macías award for the most mischievous lyric, a recognition that recalls the figure of one of the great promoters of the Agüimes Carnival.
The second prize for interpretation went to Los Pachachos, the youngest and most emerging murga in the municipality, in their first participation in the grand final. With overflowing impetus and energy, characterized as fortune tellers, they provoked laughter from the public with their continuous attacks on municipal politics, their amusing allusions to the rest of the murgas and their would commit –gossip– in a local key. They also dedicated space to social criticism, expressing their rejection of bullying, xenophobia or violence in sports, among other topics.
Third place on the podium went to Ni Quito ni Pongo, a murga that this year celebrates its 40th anniversary at the carnival. His birthday gift came in the form of prizes, the third in acting and the first in costume thanks to his elegant costume of the genie from 'One Thousand and One Nights', an allegory of the Agüimes Carnival 2024. During his performance, he took off his clothes Orientals, the 'Nikitos' were transformed into bow-and-arrow cupids, angels of love who spread sympathy and affection everywhere.
Aside from the acting awards, the most successful murga of the night was the oldest of all. On the eve of celebrating half a century at the Agüimes Carnival, Los Sombreritos won four awards: the award for best introductory video, the second prize for costumes, the José Suárez award for the most complete murga in the contest, awarded by Los Serenquenquenes, and the Aguja y Dedal award for best costume, awarded by Ni Quito Ni Pongo. Dressed as stewards of 'Aerolíneas Esfínter', an imaginary inter-island airline, they handed out their own chocolates and joked about the turbulence that a passenger flying to Agüimes may encounter.
Las Inkietas also won an award, third in costumes thanks to their seamstress costume. His pins threatened to prick the people who criticize everything and his needles and thread prepared to sew up the mouths of so many foul-mouthed people who are on the loose. Las Miruflinas, dressed as Vikings, Las Salamandras, dressed as pirates, and Las Charanguillas, characterized as lifeguards, were left without a prize this time, but with the no less gratifying consolation of having been able to sing in the grand finale and receive applause from the public. which once again packed the Plaza del Rosario, in the heart of the historic center of Agüimes.

During the final awards ceremony, prizes were also awarded to the best floats in the Inaugural Parade of the 'Arabian Nights' carnival. The first prize went to the float of the murga Vete por Así, the second to Ni Quito Ni Pongo and the third to Eventos Milan. In addition, the Celebrations area of the Agüimes City Council took advantage of the occasion to pay tribute to two carnival groups from the municipality that are celebrating their anniversary this year: the Ni Quito ni Pongo murga, which celebrates 40 years of experience, and the Aragüimé troupe, which celebrates two decades on stage. The mayor of Agüimes, Óscar Hernández, was in charge of presenting the two awards.
The grand final of the 40th edition of the Agüimes Murgas Contest featured additional performances by Los Serenquenquenes and Batucada Makana. The former warmed up the atmosphere in the square before the start of the contest and the latter entertained the public with their carnival rhythms, while waiting for the jury's verdict, which arrived around two in the morning.

Saturday Carnival Day
The Agüimes 'Arabian Nights' Carnival moves the action this Saturday to Arinaga, with the celebration of the first of the three scheduled daytime carnivals. The music of Aseres, Salvapantallas, Escuela de Calor and the show 'Te gift live', a tribute to Marc Anthony and Juan Luis Guerra, will liven up the daytime event on Avenida Polizón. In the afternoon, starting at 19:00 p.m., in Soco Negro, the Burning of the Octopus will take place, organized precisely by this year's winning murga, Los Hijos de Chano el Negro.
At night, starting at 22:00 p.m., the party will continue on two stages in Agüimes Casco: the old Sociedad del Centro –current location of the Los Lagartos murga– will host the 60s, 70s and 80s party, while that the Plaza del Rosario will vibrate with the performance of Makana Connection, the La Lagarta and La Bastona Competition and the first great festival of these carnivals, enlivened by Tony Tun Tun and la Mekánica by Tamarindos. At the end of the dance, at 03:30, hot bread with oil and garlic will be distributed, thus recovering one of the ancient traditions of the Agüimes Carnival. Special bus and taxi services have been enabled to encourage the population to travel by public transport.
