Last January, the tourism sector of Gran Canaria had one of its best months in terms of occupancy and average stay, with 89,62% of its rooms occupied and 74,79% of beds covered. This is the highest monthly occupancy in the last 7 years and the sixth month in the history of tourism on the Island.
Gran Canaria added a total of 2.523.681 overnight stays in hotel establishments and apartments in the first month of the year, 8,19% more than in January 2023. This percentage coincides with the increase in travelers on the island, with 313.218 visitors compared to the 289.000 recorded in the same month of the previous year. The average stay of clients staying on the island was 8,06 days, with a slight increase of 0,09% in the year-on-year comparison.
The Minister of Tourism of Gran Canaria, Carlos Álamo, evaluated the data positively. “We are in a moment of enormous activity. Last year we had the third highest year in volume of customer arrivals and these results for January, which is not usually a leading month within the high season, reinforce our perspective that this year we will be able to maintain the positive inertia of the last exercises in the sector. Employment is also growing in the sector, with an increase of 12% compared to the number of contracts in January 2023 and we have managed to increase turnover, through interest in local products, so income continues to increase, on this occasion about 15% higher than the same month last year.”
