The cleaning and restoration work carried out by the Department of Roads and Works has required the renovation of the barbecues and the tables and benches, and the provision of irrigation water to the 50 almond trees that shade the premises.
The Department of Roads and Works of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council has completed the complete restoration of the Tunte picnic area, which has been rehabilitated to serve the pilgrims of the Camino de Santiago and the numerous families who choose the medians of the municipality for their weekend work break.
The restoration work on the picnic area has required dedication and time. They began at the beginning of the year and have been carried out by two teams of municipal workers from the departments of Roads and Works, Parks and Gardens and Cleaning, with the cooperation of agreement workers.
The shock plan that was carried out required the clearing of the numerous accumulated undergrowth; the opening of ditches to provide irrigation to each of the 50 almond trees that shade the premises and, above all, the restoration of the 16 barbecues and the 14 concrete tables and benches, which were in a truly deplorable or even completely undone. The barbecues were restored one by one with new reflective bricks, both on surfaces and fronts, and have been equipped with new iron grills.
The recovery project of the picnic area undertaken by the councils defended by Araceli Armas Cruz and Eduardo Armas Herrera, with the collaboration of the Cleaning Ute facilitated by councilor Ruyman Cardoso, also included waterproofing and filling the cistern of the premises, with 15.000 liters of water. water for irrigation of the almond trees and for the cleaning service of the users of the space, and the renewal of the two water intakes of the common sink. In addition, the entire surface of the picnic area was covered with recycled material to give greater stability to the ground.
The task of restoring the picnic area was completed with the installation of a nominative sign for it, which has been renamed 'Merendero Camino de Santiago', a name consulted with the Santiago El Chico Neighborhood and Cultural Association, of Tunte, as an initiative promotional of the Jacobean route of this municipality.
Neighborhood and children's demand
With the recovery of this wooded picnic area with almond trees and approximately 4.311 square meters, the rear surface of which includes a parking area with capacity for about 50 vehicles, the municipal government addresses an old neighborhood demand and also responds to the resolution proposal that the municipality's schoolchildren urged at the children's plenary session that Mayor Marco Aurelio Pérez presided over on November 17, 2003.
In the absence of the installation of a sign with the rules for the use and management of the picnic area, Councilor Eduardo Armas, supervisor of the restoration works, calls for care, cleanliness and environmental and material respect for the premises as a public leisure space.
