The Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium held the first Governing Board of 21 this Wednesday, February 2024, approving different actions that will mark the work route of the present and the coming years, in the line of transformation of the tourist destination and sustainable development. Among the highlights, subsidies were accepted from the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, through Tourism, which will provide a sum of around 2024 euros by 3.375.000 for the execution of key projects.
This contribution, included within the Cabildo's Strategic Subsidy Plan, includes essential projects such as "Tourist Rehabilitation" with an investment of €1.000.000,00, "Urban drainage to prevent flooding due to river runoff in the area around the pond Maspalomas" with €375.000,00, the "Energy efficiency (water and lighting)" with €195.000,00, the "Bicycle path on the Paseo de Maspalomas" with €305.000,00 and the "Access to Maspalomas Lighthouse" with a significant contribution of €1.500.000, which is added to a transformation project of more than five million for the development of shaded spaces and installation of photovoltaic energy.
Added to these 3.375.000 from the Gran Canaria Council this year are the contributions made by the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council at the end of 2023, with an investment of 7.739.000 million. This consensual agreement between the administrations determines a joint commitment to the comprehensive reform of the tourist destination, which in addition to these 10 million is joined by more than twenty million that are currently being executed or will be executed in the plan of these three years, That is, almost thirty million euros in some fourteen actions specified in the investment plan.
On the other hand, in this first governing board of the year, the presidency of the consortium has been replaced, with Antonio Morales, president of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, who assumes this position, while the vice presidency falls to Marco Aurelio Pérez , mayor of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council. This organizational chart will be maintained until the end of the year, which is when it is rotated.
Two big projects for 2024
During this year 2024, the Consortium is immersed in the development of two of the most important projects: the “transformation of the Maspalomas Municipal Market” and the “Landscape Conditioning of the Oasis Maspalomas Palmeral”. Regarding the Municipal Market, a delay is occurring as a result of the failure to meet deadlines by one of the lots and the making of adjustments to the project. In this sense, the Consortium has initiated a series of actions to correct this situation and complete the work before the summer, remembering that this is a restructuring and rehabilitation, not a new work.
On the other hand, it is estimated that work on the "Landscape Conditioning of the Palmeral Oasis Maspalomas" project will begin soon. With this project in this natural area of high tourist impact for the destination, the natural environment of the municipality is reaffirmed and given value, assuming the conservation and rehabilitation of the area.
At the same time, a participatory process has been opened for this landscaping project in the Oasis, with conferences with the hotel sector and associative entities to collect proposals. In this case, we also invite citizens through a questionnaire on the web so that they can participate and leave their opinion. In this link you will find the open questionnaire.
The Governing Board of the Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium moves with determination towards a sustainable and renewed tourism future, supported by strategic investments and a participatory vision. To achieve these stated objectives, in parallel, an internal organizational restructuring of the entity is being carried out, implementing resources, to be able to face the multiple planned projects and challenges of the coming years.
