Last night, two men were injured after a strong fight in the Plaza de Maspalomas area, located on Avenida de Italia in the tourist center of Playa del Inglés, south of Gran Canaria.
The events took place at 4:00 a.m. this Sunday, when two people involved confronted each other with knives and broken bottles; One of the affected people had moderate cuts on his neck and the other had minor cuts on his face.
For the vice president of the tourist association, the situation has acquired a high volume of “bestial” attacks and, in addition, he regretted that all safety and respect regulations within the defense protocol against COVID are not being met.
"These are certain groups of local young people and others of Moroccan origin, who do not come to have fun, as happens with the rest of the clients, but rather they show up at the place to pick fights and attack the clients," said Smulders, who requests greater preventive presence.
These troubled young people travel to the area to hold large parties on public roads with their own music equipment and drink large amounts of alcohol until they lose control.
In addition, some carry out illegal car races around the roundabout that borders the area where accidents and destruction of public furniture have occurred.
The situation has generated an increase in complaints and negative comments through the rating platforms of the surrounding tourist complexes.
On the other hand, in other areas coexistence is respected, this is the case of the Yumbo shopping center, where at the same time of the events the Winter Pride events were being held without altercations, although greater anti-covid prevention is demanded.
“Taking out knives easily becomes unemblematic and counterproductive to restarting the tourist image in which more protection is demanded for our values of tourist and human quality,” said Smulders.
The businessmen have regretted the situation that they describe as “very serious” since it is not the first time that it has occurred during recent weekends in the nightlife area of the Plaza de Maspalomas.
Among the people who have been harmed by these events are even workers such as waiters and receptionists.
