The director of Puertos Canarios and the general director of Fisheries visit Mogán

The mayor of Mogán, Onalia Bueno, has received in the municipality the general director of Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands, Armiche Ramos, and the managing director of Puertos Canarios, José Gilberto Moreno, with whom she visited the port facilities of Arguineguín and Playa de Mogan. During the meeting, in which the Councilor for Fisheries, Víctor Gutiérrez, and representatives of the Mogán fishing guilds also participated, it was possible to convey the needs for improvement of both docks as well as the problems faced by the fishing sector of the archipelago.

The visit began at the Arguineguín Dock, where the deterioration of the facility was evident due to, as Bueno pointed out, “the abandonment and lack of investment in the maintenance of the infrastructure.” Although it is true that there is an action that will soon be put out to tender for 2 million euros for the organization and improvement of the pontoons by Puertos Canarios, the entity that manages the port facility, the mayor of Mogan stressed other “imperative” needs.

Among these, the asphalting of the entire surface and the coating of the vertical wall that protects the main breakwater of the Port. Also, the opening of the toilet module that was installed a few years ago and has never been used. “Access must be adapted for people with reduced mobility and opened at once for sailors as well as for users of maritime transport lines arriving and departing at the dock,” he noted.

Likewise, he put on the table the existence of a good number of abandoned boats in Arguineguín that occupy the work space used by sailors to prepare their own boats. “It is necessary that they remove them to free up the dock and also to improve the electrical system and lighting for our fishermen,” he said, also pointing out the importance of the storage rooms for these being inside the port facility and not outside. as occurs to date.

For its part, in Puerto de Mogán the removal of abandoned vessels is also proposed, in addition to the improvement of the concrete slab and the establishment of a clean point for the waste that is generated in the area and whose management corresponds to Puertos Canarios. . Likewise, it has reported the need to carry out action so that the boat lift can maneuver. “Now it doesn't have enough radius to turn,” he explained.

“In these four years we will ensure that both ports are in good condition,” said the Moganera mayor, who assures that she will use her position as a representative of the municipality on the board of directors of Puertos Canarios “to monitor and ensure that the projects are completed.”

Bueno has also announced that "the Government of the Canary Islands has aligned itself with the Mogán City Council" and "will not continue authorizing the Arguineguín Dock as a base for the Maritime Rescue facilities." This company is a public entity dependent on the State and, as it is in charge of maritime security, it carries out rescue operations for migrants arriving in irregular boats. “The Rescue post was installed in Arguineguín in 2005 and we would have no problem with it continuing to be there if it were not for the unsustainable situation that has been reached, such as the accumulation of boats and canoes,” he noted.

After several years of complaints about this matter, it has now been, specifically for a few days, that the Government of Spain is eliminating the accumulated canoes, removing up to twenty of those that, precisely because they were not moved in a reasonable time, have been finished. sinking “We cannot reach this point for several reasons,” explains the mayor. One of these, the risk to the safety of the people and property around them due to the amount of waste and even fuel they carry. Another, the image that is offered to users of the maritime transport lines, to those who visit the facility to enjoy the nautical offering, make purchases at the fishmonger and/or enjoy a meal at the restaurant located in the interior of the port.
