The Councilor for Tourism, Yilenia Vega: “Our objective is to diversify our tourism offer, betting on segments that provide added value and capture the attention of a younger visitor”
Alejandro Marichal: “It is necessary to do good promotion, but it is vital to have first-class tourist infrastructure and municipal services to continue being an attractive destination for tourists”
The Tourism Department of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, headed by Councilor Yilenia Vega (CC), has moved to Germany with three very clear objectives, on the one hand, to promote the events and festivals of tourist interest that will be held throughout 2024. On the other hand, conversations have begun with different German administrations with the aim of initiating a twinning with a German city that stands out for the celebration of its Carnival, which is intended to continue positioning Maspalomas Costa Canaria in such a market. important as German.
As Vega indicates, we are taking stock of 2023. This year, the councilor indicates, has closed with a total of 2,7 million tourists received and, although it represents 40% of the tourist volume chosen by our municipality, it is still the billing level is below what was billed in 2019, the year in which it reached 71 million compared to just over 65 million billed in 2023. With these data, we come to the conclusion that the German market is suffering a certain economic reception given that 2023 closed with 0.2% economic growth (GDP), and the forecasts for 2024 are around 0,2 and 05%; Therefore, the estimates regarding business volume for 2024 “are not at all encouraging given that the results for 2023 will not improve.”
Having said this, German tourists continue to be the ones who spend the most time in our municipality with an average stay of 11,6 days, and in turn, those who spend the most at their destination. It must be taken into account, Vega indicates, that the average tourist expenditure is 1.400 euros while the German tourist spends an average of 1.640 euros. Consequently, "as an Administration we must make an effort to continue betting on a market that is so decisive for our destiny."
Given this situation, our objective is to establish a promotion strategy for this term that will consist of diversifying our tourism offer, betting on other segments that provide added value and capture the attention of a younger visitor. For this reason, in addition to our Sun and Beach, we will launch the promotion of other complementary offers such as Culture, Sports, Gastronomy and Leisure, explains the Councilor for Tourism.
Thus, in 2023 and 2024 "we have incorporated two new festivals into our events agenda, DN7 and TouriFest, beyond those that have usually been held in our municipality." In addition, Maspalomas Costa Canaria has been promoted at the main tourism fairs through virtual reality and augmented reality to bring the benefits of our destination to future tourists. Likewise, “we have allocated 1,2 million euros to develop the Maspalomas Costa Canaria Promotion Plan that we intend to execute throughout 2024,” concludes Vega.

For his part, the first deputy mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Alejandro Marichal, who also attended the ITB 2024 Fair, highlighted that in addition to good promotion, “it is necessary that the tourist who visits us meets with “first-class tourist infrastructure and municipal services.” For this reason, Marichal continues, work is being done from the Urban Planning area with the Government of the Canary Islands in the preparation of a Modernization Plan that "we hope will be approved throughout this legislature" and which will have the purpose of "facilitating the renovation of tourist establishments and shopping centers with the license for the renewal of the CC as priority objectives. Annex II and the demolition of the CC Metro.
Likewise, from the point of view of tourist infrastructure, points out the first deputy mayor, in these eight months the City Council from the Tourism area, “has transferred eight million euros to the Tourist Rehabilitation Consortium to put out to tender three strategic works such as the creation of an avenue and bike lane from El Hornillo to Pasito Blanco, the improvement of the walks that border the Barranco de Maspalomas from La Charca to the GC-500 and the conditioning of the Paseo Marítimo that connects the Tropical Shopping Center to the Beach Club Hotel San Agustin. To these eight million, continues the first deputy mayor, are added the projects that the Consortium is already working on, to be put out to tender throughout this term, which are, improving the surroundings of the Maspalomas Lighthouse, accessibility works to the beaches, and the improvement of the surroundings of the Charca de Maspalomas, concludes Marichal.
