The Gran Canaria Primavera Sur Craft Fair shines at the Maspalomas Lighthouse

The fair has a program that includes a carnival parade, musical performances and two parade sessions of textile products and accessories made in Gran Canaria.

68 artisans from 16 municipalities are present, offering a sample of 24 artisan trades, of the 87 that make up the Repertory of Craft Trades of the Canary Islands.

 

With the Maspalomas Lighthouse as a witness, the Gran Canaria Primavera Sur Crafts Fair opened its thirteenth edition this Friday morning, March 15, bringing together 68 artisans from 16 municipalities of Gran Canaria, who offer an exhibition of 24 artisan trades, of the 87 that make up the Repertory of Craft Trades of the Canary Islands.

Pottery, basket weaving, cutlery making, ceramics, jewelry, forging, wool spinning and footwear production, among others, market their products of the best quality and guarantee the work traditions of our land.

 

The Minister of Economic Development, Industry, Commerce and Crafts of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Minerva Alonso, accompanied by the mayor of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, Marco Aurelio Pérez, the managing director of Fedac, Águeda Hernández, and the general director of Infecar, Gran Canaria Fair, Natalia Santana, has visited each of the stands present at this event, welcoming them to this edition and getting to know their pieces first-hand.

“Today we inaugurate a craft fair that is full of new features, with the presence of 68 artisans from the island of Gran Canaria, offering tourists who are spending their holidays in the south of our island the best of our popular heritage,” Minister Minerva Alonso said during the inauguration.

 

This will be the first Gran Canaria Spring South Craft Fair that is organized by Infecar, “and it opens with a dynamic program that will have musical performances on both Fridays, fashion shows in the morning and afternoon on Saturday and a parade of carnival.”

In relation to the sales that are expected to be made over these ten days, Minerva Alonso has indicated that, “although there are no estimated data, since the pandemic passed, collections have been increasing progressively. In 2021 the collection was 77.000 euros; that of 2022, 134.000 euros and the last one of 2023, 137.000 euros. We hope that this year it will increase and we are convinced that this will be the case.”

For his part, Marco Aurelio Pérez, mayor of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, collaborator of this Crafts Fair, pointed out that “success is guaranteed. We are in an area where nature graces us with its benefits and, in addition, the hotel spaces are completely full, which guarantees the flow of clients throughout these days.”

 

The crafts of Gran Canaria, as an example of the art and cultural tradition of the town, represents the identity and generational legacy of ancient crafts, offering a great diversity of unique products or limited series, manufactured by the privileged hands of creators who pamper each piece with detail.

 

The Gran Canaria Primavera Sur Crafts Fair will remain open until next Sunday, March 24, from 10.00:19.00 a.m. to 68:XNUMX p.m., with XNUMX artisans who will show their ceramic creations; ceramics and modeling; leather goods; fabric decoration; jeweler's; macrame; needle; Dressmaker; glassworks; patchworks; toy store; miniatures; recycling of materials; traditional carpentry; chandlery; cabinetmaking; blacksmithing, forging and locksmithing; soap making; dolls; doll maker and dressmaker; wood turning; paper and paperboard; cigars and printing and engraving.

In relation to their origin, the participants of this thirteenth edition land at the Maspalomas Lighthouse arriving from 16 of the municipalities of Gran Canaria, with 29 from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; nine from Agüimes; six from San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Telde; three from Santa Lucía de Tirajana; two from Ingenio, Santa Brígida, Santa María de Guía and Teror; and one from Agaete, Arucas, Firgas, Gáldar, Mogán, Moya, and Valsequillo.

 

Dynamization program

 

In addition to learning about the artisanal work of the participants of this craft fair, visitors to this edition have the opportunity to enjoy a revitalization program for the two weekends in which the fair takes place and which are presented as an incentive for Let as many citizens as possible join this event. 

 

This program premiered this Friday, with a musical performance by Abraham Ramos and Juan Sebastián Ramírez, with the timple as the protagonist. For this Sunday, a carnival parade representative of the Gran Canaria Carnival will take place from 12.30:XNUMX p.m. 

 

For the following weekend, on Friday the 22nd, at 12.30:23 p.m., there will be a musical performance by the Trío Con-Trastres; and on Saturday the 12.30rd parade of textile products and accessories made in Gran Canaria, at 17.00:XNUMX p.m. and XNUMX:XNUMX p.m.

Likewise, the fair also has a live crafts space, in which the participants of this event will be the protagonists, showing how they make their products. The premiere was made by the potter María Teresa Ríos, bringing one of the oldest crafts to the public present on this first day of the fair.
