The vehicle was presented this Tuesday at the facilities of the Canary Islands Technological Institute in an event that was attended by the mayor of Agüimes, Óscar Hernández.
Global line 25, which connects Arinaga with Maspalomas, will incorporate starting next week a new ecological bus with a 100% sustainable green hydrogen engine, the first of its kind on the island of Gran Canaria. The vehicle has been transferred to the transport company by the Canary Islands Technological Institute (ITC) within the framework of a pioneering research, development and innovation (R&D&I) project in Europe, which has led to the launch of an experimental biofuel production plant.
The infrastructure, unique in the Canary Islands, manages to transform water into green hydrogen. Built with European funds, it is located in the ITC facilities in the Southeast of Gran Canaria. It was inaugurated in November 2023 with the aim of testing the use of this fuel in land transportation throughout the archipelago.
The bus presented this Tuesday, which will use the production of this experimental plant, consumes 7 kilos of hydrogen per 100 kilometers for a theoretical range of about 500 kilometers. It will begin operating next week, covering the regular route between Arinaga and Maspalomas with two daily trips, thus replicating the initiative that is already being developed in other Spanish cities such as Madrid, Barcelona or Zaragoza. The analysis of its operation on the road, its technical characteristics and its real autonomy will allow us to assess the possibility of extending the experience to other island lines.
