Although at the moment the presence of the sector is a minority, the southeast of Gran Canaria can be an investment opportunity for all those audiovisual companies that want to land on the island and not be overcrowded in the capital or El Goro.
That Gran Canaria (and the archipelago in general) is growing unstoppably within the audiovisual sector is no secret to anyone. Images of filming and actors in the streets of the archipelago are beginning to become common. In addition, to all this is added the Dreamland Studios megaproject in Telde, which promises to further boost this growth with the largest and most modern film studios in Europe.
However, the television business in Gran Canaria has nothing to envy the growth of the film industry. The island has multiple audiovisual production companies in charge of creating the programs that we see daily on regional television and that have even received national awards.
In fact, one of those production companies has decided to settle in the southeast of the island; specifically in the Arinaga Industrial Estate, where among furniture and decoration stores we can find an 800 square meter set where more than 6 hours of television content is produced daily and in which more than 200 professionals are employed. According to the website of the company that owns it, this set is “the most modern and extensive in the Canary Islands, as well as one of the best in Spain.”
This infrastructure houses an audiovisual production company responsible for programs that are broadcast daily on Televisión Canaria and advertising spots broadcast on Telecinco nationwide.
Currently, the Arinaga Industrial Estate hosts all types of businesses in its more than 6 million square meters, although almost half of them (48,50%) are dedicated to wholesale and retail trade. Although the rest of the industries present are quite diversified, with the information and communications sector (which includes the audiovisual sector) accounting for 0,8%.
Until now, the majority of production companies and audiovisual companies on the island were based in El Goro and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; Could the Arinaga Industrial Estate be established as a meeting point for television and film production companies and attract one of the sectors with the greatest growth expected on the islands?
It's too early to know if the Arinaga Industrial Park will become one of Europe's major audiovisual hubs for film and television, but Agüimes was already flexing its muscles a few weeks ago, boasting about hosting the filming of the series "The Road Trip " by the American production company Paramount. Óscar Hernández and Antonio Morales didn't miss the opportunity to take the obligatory photo on the set, an opportunity that undoubtedly sparked the desire of their counterparts in neighboring municipalities to attract this type of industry to their areas.
As a curiosity or point to take into account, Paramount itself has flirted with Warner for a merger that would seek to revolutionize streaming services and that would represent a historic bombshell in Hollywood (as if Las Palmas and Tenerife merged into a single club, to understand each other). A Warner who weeks ago was looking for a financial analyst in Gran Canaria to work in person and who, for the moment, does not seem to have found it, since the offer is still active on her LinkedIn page.
