At the end of 2023, the director of Cáritas Diocesana de Canarias, Gonzalo Marrero, announced the closure at the request of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council of the facilities in which the entity had been caring for homeless people in the municipality. The Caipsho project services for homeless people had to be transferred to the Parish Caritas in the area, with new alternatives for reception, care and support for homeless people, which are in the design and study phase.
The closure of the project facilities occurred after the diocesan Institution received a notification on November 30, 2023 from the Department of Social Services, Social Action and Seniors of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council in which it communicated Cáritas Diocesana de Canarias that the City Council had made the decision to close the municipal facilities because they were not suitable.
Given the impossibility of having facilities to care for homeless people, Cáritas has presented two projects to care for people who are cared for by parish Cáritas: Training and job placement for homeless people ( Employment Area) and a Mobile Street Care Unit for the care and monitoring of homeless people (Housing Area).
This April, the Employment area of Cáritas Diocesana de Canarias participated last Friday in the II Employment and Training Exhibition of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The objective of this event in Maspalomas was to make citizens aware of the wide range of options that exist on the island in terms of training and employment, so that they can access the current and future labor market with greater guarantee. The Employment area of Cáritas Diocesana de Canarias addresses the violation of the right to Employment, working by defining a personalized itinerary of socio-labor insertion adjusted to the achievement of short, medium and long-term objectives, which is combined in parallel with training for employment and the contact to find solutions.
