The Minister of Tourism of Gran Canaria, Carlos Álamo, received the conclusions positively. “It comes to endorse the positive perspective of the destination at a time when the tourism zero of the pandemic, as well as the negative consequences for the sector, are still present. So it means that we have recovered in a very short time and we have maintained or increased the interest of European customers in our destination, something that was a priority at that time. It is clear that we came out stronger, with a destination that has improved and attracts customers more than ever. The foundations have been laid for what will be the destiny of the coming years. Now it's time to continue working on making each client's visit as profitable as possible so that the sector's income is distributed throughout the island," Álamo noted.
The final report of the study, on a general European population of 373.326.767 people, indicates that Gran Canaria receives a percentage of European women of 51,7% compared to 48,1% of men and the age group with the greatest presence, 19% are between 45 and 54 years old, closely followed by the 35 to 44 year old group and the 55 to 54 age group, both with 18% representation. The relatively low presence of senior clients stands out, with 17% over 65 years old and 16% for the group between 25 and 34 years old. The most common budget is the one that goes from 1.000 euros to 2.999 euros, with 37,9% of the total. Above this figure, 18,1% appears with spending up to 4.999 euros and 9,4 reaches a range that reaches 9.999 euros.
The study also analyzes travel catalysts, those factors that tourists actively look for when deciding their next vacation destination. In the first position among the travel catalysts of those who have already visited the destination, are gastronomic experiences, followed by outdoor and nature experiences, cultural and historical experiences; and in fourth position the interest in going to the beach. The preferred accommodations are 3 and 4 star hotels as the main option for 47,9% of European clients.
The report indicates that the traveler, when choosing a vacation destination or a travel product, uses, on the one hand, the opinion of friends and family to decide a destination, followed by travel programs on television, recommendations from travel agencies , while in the field of online information they rely on online search engines and platforms, websites and social networks such as Instagram.
It is also interesting to note that Gran Canaria ranks 24th out of 139 global tourist destinations in terms of image and 32nd in terms of awareness of the destination brand. This last statistic indicates that 73,6% of European travelers are aware of Gran Canaria as a tourist destination. The brand image index is calculated using an algorithm based on the perception, experience and knowledge of the destination among customers who have not visited it. In this sense, 88,3% of European travelers have a positive perception of Gran Canaria. 54,1% of these travelers are interested in visiting Gran Canaria at some point in the future and 19,4% are interested in doing so in the next three years.
