The lack of cold, high temperatures and wind will again greatly reduce the harvest, estimating only about 15.000 kilos for this campaign.
The farmers of San Bartolomé de Tirajana dedicated mainly to the cultivation of apricots in the midlands of the municipality received this Wednesday the control traps against the pest of the fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata) provided annually by the Ministry of the Primary Sector and Food Sovereignty of the Gran Canaria Cabildo.

The delivery of the flycatchers took place at the Pancho Guerra Cultural Center, in Tunte, in an event coordinated and supervised by the Department of Agriculture directed by the eighth deputy mayor Araceli Armas Cruz.
This year, around thirty farmers have benefited from this initiative, receiving around 2.000 fly traps, which are intended to cover an approximate area of 20 hectares planted with apricots.
There is concern in the sector. The apricot harvest campaign in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana began this week and a reduced global harvest of just 15.000 kilos is expected, as happened last year.

This decrease is due to the adverse weather that the crop has suffered. The lack of cold in winter and the haze conditions, in addition to the high temperatures and strong wind that the plantations have suffered in recent days, have produced a considerable decrease in production.
