The two sides of the coin in Gran Canaria: a transphobic attack on national television while we celebrate Pride in Maspalomas

In a matter of a week, the south of Gran Canaria has gone from being the scene of a public complaint for a brutal transphobic attack to celebrating the 23rd edition of Maspalomas Pride

A few days ago a case of transphobia was made public in the southeast of Gran Canaria. A trans woman publicly denounced the brutal attack she suffered from a stranger in the Arinaga Crossing. “He started yelling at me that he was a fucking faggot and that he was going to burn all the faggots,” says Yuri González, the young woman attacked, barely 18 years old.

Between kicks, punches, stabs and insults, Yuri thought he was staying there, in the plaza of the Cruce de Arinaga church, where he suffered the brutal attack. “I went into shock, I couldn't defend myself because I thought I was dying,” Yuri stated a few days ago in an interview with Televisión Canaria.

And, although the attack happened a little less than a year ago, Yuri has decided to make this case public after reaching the age of majority and knowing the ridiculous sentence faced by the person who beat him: a year of work. socio-educational and 240 euros for beating a person shouting “I'm going to kill you, you fucking faggot”

In recent days, Yuri has taken his case to the media. Regional newspapers and regional television have collected his testimony, but national television has also echoed his case. This Thursday, the morning show 'En Boca de Todos', on Cuatro, interviewed Yuri to find out all the details of his case.

The case aroused the indignation of the collaborators and even the presenter, Nacho Abad, after analyzing the case, assured that, taking into account Yuri's statements, the sentence should have been for attempted murder.

The case came to the public scene a few days before the celebration of 'Pride by Freedom' in Maspalomas; a celebration that brings together thousands of people from all over the world to celebrate diversity and turn San Bartolomé de Tirajana into the epicenter of the LGTBIQ+ community for a few days.

A historical event in the municipality that, of course, is not related to the aggression that Yur suffered; but it highlights the work that remains to be done on the island and in general at the national level to guarantee the safety of the group both with a festival to celebrate diversity and pride, and on a day-to-day basis so that neither Yuri nor anyone another person is attacked for being who they are.
