The XXXII edition of the Maspalomas Summer University returns from June 26 to July 12

The XXXII edition of the Maspalomas Summer University will return, from June 26 to July 12, with a program that will offer 26 courses and workshops, in addition to a trip to La Palma, the celebration of the Rotary International CAMP and the concerts of the Maspalomas International Trumpet Festival and the Maspalomas Costa Canaria Soul Festival.

 

Like every year, the oldest summer university in the Canary Islands, with 32 years of experience, is organized by the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Cabildo de Gran Canaria.

 

The presentation of the program included interventions by the rector of the ULPGC, Lluís Serra Majem; the mayor of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, Marco Aurelio Pérez Sánchez; the Minister of Territorial Policy and Landscape of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Ines Miranda Navarro; the Councilor for the Presidency, Human Resources, Culture, Equality, Youth and Education of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, Elena Álamo Vega, and the director of the Maspalomas Summer University, Guillermo Morales, Professor at the Carlos III University of Madrid.

 

 

Lluís Serra Majem expressed his satisfaction, on behalf of the ULPGC, with the celebration of the 32 years: "We are proud to contribute to this event offering a quality program, to complement the training with current topics." For the rector, beyond the objectives of the ULPGC, based on teaching, research and transfer, the summer university program allows “contributing to improving society, through university extension.” He highlighted the importance of the course that will address suicide in young people, scheduled in this edition, which represents a mortality rate three times higher than traffic accidents, “so it is an issue that we must address and try to solve.” : The pandemic itself has worsened our mental health levels.”

 

Marco Aurelio Pérez Sánchez pointed out that the summer university's programming is concerned with offering highly current topics, in addition to the courses that it maintains due to its student success, such as Public Speaking. Among the complementary activities, the mayor highlighted the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Rotary International CAMP, "which every year brings young people of different nationalities to Maspalomas, so that they can discuss and make proposals to live in Peace." The mayor said that this university is a forum for training and discussion, but it also offers activities to “have a good time.” 

 

In her speech, Inés Miranda Navarro recalled that, in previous editions, the summer university has offered more than 1.000 activities and has become “a training commitment that was incorporated to complement the tourism offer of the municipality and in which consolidated with the Rotary International Campus, which made it possible for Maspalomas to become the World Capital for Peace.” She reiterated the support of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria for the efforts of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, to maintain this “fundamental initiative so that the ULPGC can reach all corners of the Island.” 

 

Elena Álamo Vega pointed out that, for yet another edition, the summer university of Maspalomas maintains its programming to continue standing out as a “meeting for training, personal enrichment and culture.” The councilor indicated that “collaboration ties have been strengthened with the Adeje Summer University of Tenerife. A younger university, but with which we have many similarities.” 

 

In addition to the traditional courses that are repeated every year, such as Oratory, the councilor noted, she said that current issues "that concern us as a society will also be addressed, such as the 'Youth and Suicide' course, a reality in which we must get involved, from the institutions. Another of the highlighted topics, the reality of ASD students, will be discussed by experts, and the Trans reality will also be discussed, from the point of view of employability.

 

For his part, Guillermo Morales highlighted that a third of the teachers are ULPGC professors. This edition, Morales explained, has a budget of 42.000 euros, plus 16.000 euros from the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, 500 euros expected from registration fees, plus aid that will be provided by the Government of the Canary Islands to finance the course to address the Reform of the Law of the Soil and Natural Areas of the Canary Islands.
