The Festivities in honor of the Holy Trinity of El Tablero, which are celebrated from May 09 to 19, organized by the Department of Celebrations and Events of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, were inaugurated with the recognition of Mercedes Romano, a resident of El Tablero who received the Vara de la Romera de Honor 2024. The award presented represents the historical, cultural, ethnographic and agricultural values of the El Tablero neighborhood and each year it is presented to a person or group for their contribution to the promotion and conservation of culture and traditions of the municipality.

Family and friends spoke about Mercedes Romano, better known as 'La Negra' or 'La Panadera', through a testimonial video, highlighting her passion, generosity, her great sense of humor and her entrepreneurial work "in times of those in which women were little valued.” Born in 1941, the eighth of 11 siblings, she was known for delivering bread to the most remote neighborhoods of El Tablero, on her Perico donkey. In addition, she was known for the "pranks that she played as a child against the village priest, her former boss at the La Rotonda restaurant, and even the Count of Vega Grande himself, whom she once poured a champagne bottle with ice over. while he was sunbathing in the restaurant pool.”
Closely linked to the social, cultural and sports life of El Tablero, the Casa del Mato Cultural Association of El Tablero proposed the nominee for being “an emblematic and cultural character of the town, for being part of the group of Elders of the town, her active selfless participation in the development of the El Tablero Football Club; in addition to her for her grace and self-confidence to encourage participation in the festivities of yesteryear. For sharing her knowledge about the harvest, for making known and preserving the historical values of the municipality. For contributing to the participation of the pilgrimage and the growth of the El Tablero Pilgrimage and above all, for her special involvement in the construction of the new Church of El Tablero, among many other milestones that the president of the Cultural Association highlighted. .
Last year's pilgrim of Honor, Epi Rodríguez, was in charge of presenting Mercedes Romano with the Rod of Honor. In addition, both received the 'Pin de la Vara', from the Councilor for Celebrations and Events, Yilenia Vega. For her part, the mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana also gave Romano a plaque commemorating the year in which Mercedes Romano, 'La Negra', becomes Honorary Romera at the El Tablero 2024 Festival.
