The tourist tax that Onalia Bueno wants to promote in Mogán lacks a legal report to support its implementation

 

Following the announcement by the mayor of Mogán about her intention to implement a tourist tax in the municipality of Mogán, on May 6, the councilors of Nueva Canarias (NC) Juanma Gabella and Javier Romero, wrote to the mayor of Mogán, requesting a copy of the legal report in which Onalia Bueno supported all the statements related to the implementation of this rate.

 

To the surprise of the councilors of the nationalist formation, the presidential department has sent them a letter in which it expresses with complete clarity that "there is still no legal report."

 

 

For NC this is something very serious, since the mayor of Mogán, Onalia Bueno, has been fueling a debate based on mere conjectures, without legal support, generating uncertainty among businessmen in the sector.

 

This way of proceeding by the mayor of Mogán would confirm that this media action has more to do with the need to focus the entire debate around her, and show her own voice, after her problems with the Canary Coalition, than in proposing options. realistic in relation to an issue that leaves no one indifferent.

 

The implementation of a rate of this type should not be done in isolation, nor on the basis of occurrences, which are based on what is done in other countries and in other European citizens that cannot even be compared with the reality of Mogán, nor with the reality of the Canary Islands, especially due to the differences that exist in the different legal systems, and the non-existence of VAT in our archipelago. At this point it is important to remember that tourists pay the IGIC on their invoices and that it reaches the municipalities of the Canary Islands.

 

The mayor of Mogán has acted irresponsibly, and the implementation of this tax rate, whether as a rate or any other fiscal figure, must start from both a serious legal analysis and an exhaustive analysis of the reality of each territory, since it is evident that the situation of the tourism sector of Gran Canaria, from the point of view of hotel construction, for example, has nothing to do with that of other islands of the archipelago.

 

For the councilors of NC, Juanma Gabella and Javier Romero, this proposal by Onalia Bueno hides a very serious problem of municipal financing. As they recall, from Onalia Bueno's statements to different media outlets, it is clear that this rate intends to finance public services provided in tourist areas. This proposal must be contextualized within the framework of all the modifications and creation of tax ordinances that the Onalia Bueno government has implemented in these months of government. In this sense, we must remember, for example, the increase in the rate for the provision of the garbage collection service operated at the beginning of 2024, with increases ranging from 81% in homes of more than 90m2, to 243,62%. % for hotels and aparthotels.

 

The Canary Islands Municipal Financing Fund, year after year, concludes that Mogán has problems generating net savings, that is, that it has problems self-financing, hence all the new rates and increases in existing ones that it has been implementing for a whole year.

 

From NC, it is considered that it is not serious to use this type of debate, to temporarily seek a way to solve the problems of Mogán, overlooking that what is needed is to develop, from the Parliament of the Canary Islands, a way that avoids the kingdoms of tourist tariffs, which would weaken the destination, and a consensual solution is proposed, with the agents involved, for the entire Canary Islands.

 

Onalia Bueno, once again, has acted in an interested and opportunistic manner, thinking about her political relationship with the Canarian Coalition, and how to take a shot at those who did not let her intervene in the last convention they held in Gran Canaria. That she should stop conspiring and get to work defending the general interest, both councilors stated.
