Las Palmas chooses the difficult path to stay in first place

The yellows certify their permanence after a goalless draw against Cádiz that sent the Andalusian team to second place

Unión Deportiva Las Palmas will be a LaLiga EA Sports team next season. Something that was taken for granted months ago (when people dreamed more about Europe than about permanence), but that in recent weeks has been the biggest concern of players and fans.

The team's disconnection this second round has diminished the enthusiasm for “doing something more” than simply holding on in the first round. A goal that, although it is true that the club did not support it, became almost a fetish for a fan who saw how (with Girona's permission) UD Las Palmas emerged as a revelation team in the first round.

The blow of reality was not small. The defeats began to follow one another until they equaled the club's worst streak this century (8 consecutive defeats, as already happened in 2017) and that permanence that was taken for granted at the end of the first round began to cause concern.

The climax came last week. After two consecutive victories for Cádiz (one of them more than doubtful against Sevilla) and the defeat of the Unión Deportiva in Mallorca against a direct rival in the fight for permanence, the yellow fans began to feel anxiety and a knot in the throat when realizing that the club could take one of the biggest blows in its history. 'From dreaming about Europe to going to second gear', a disaster almost on par with the infamous 'Cordobazo'.

Finally, after a draw at home against Betis and another at Nuevo Mirandilla in a melee with Cádiz that sent the Andalusians to second, the yellow team has managed to secure its place in first for another year.

However, the feeling is bittersweet. Beyond the smiles and joy, the team's data is dramatic. Unión Deportiva Las Palmas has not achieved victory since February 10, they have had 8 consecutive defeats and in the last 10 games (two months and ten days) they have only been able to score three goals.

Statistics that predict changes in the squad for next season and that everything indicates that they will start on the bench, with García Pimienta packing his bags and leaving the yellow club.
