Santa Lucía celebrates Canary Islands Day with its Crafts Fair, exhibition of games, native sports and Los Gofiones

 

Angelina Duque was born 85 years ago in La Palma but has been living in Vecindario for 20 years. She is the oldest artisan of those who exhibit their products this Wednesday and Thursday at the Craft Fair on Avenida de Canarias. During the tour at the opening of the fair carried out by the mayor of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Francisco García and the Councilor for Culture and Identity, Yaiza Pérez, the palm tree artisan takes the opportunity to tell the mayor “here I am one more year, selling the “Things I do because this is my life and also,” he says, laughing, “I'm looking for a kid.”

 

With the inauguration of the Crafts Fair this Wednesday, the final events of the Department of Culture and Identity's program to celebrate Canary Islands Day begin. The craft fair will be open in the Open Commercial Zone at the Plaza de los Algodoneros this Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 22 p.m. In the craft stalls you can find necklaces with pintaderas and other Canarian motifs, sarcillos, bracelets, Canarian skirts, aprons, dolls, miniatures of Canarian balconies, windmills or idols of taras.

 

The mayor asks Angelina not to get up and approaches to greet her. Angelina sells bags and Canarian clothing, but she shows the mayor a small broom, as if it were a miniature made of palm. “You place this broom in your house, and anyone who comes with bad energy, the broom placed at the door scares away the bad energy,” says Angelina Mayor while she shows him the small broom that she sells for one euro.

 

 

Francisco García finishes touring the Crafts Fair and declares that "this year we opened the fair on the eve of Canary Islands Day to begin to encourage citizens and tomorrow we will have in this pedestrian area the exhibition of sports and native games and the concerts" . The Councilor for Culture and Identity, Yaiza Pérez, highlights that “with the Crafts Fair and the events today and tomorrow in the pedestrian zone and on Friday in Santa Lucía helmet, culminates a program of multiple activities that we began on May 4, in which we have had talks, exhibitions and round tables where we have talked about popular culture and Canarian identity.” 

 

This Wednesday afternoon there will be a performance by the Amor Canario Folkloric Group and students from the Municipal School in the Plaza de Los Algodoneros. Yeray Rodríguez will perform at the same place this Wednesday starting at 20 p.m. Then Yaimiley Cruz and Mariachi Peleón. 

 

On the Canary Islands day, on a musical level, there will be performances by the Achimence Folkloric Group and the Roca Canaria Folkloric Association and the Chácaras y Tambores Tagenza Cultural Association in the morning in the Plaza de Los Algodoneros. In the afternoon, at 6, Tabaiba Proyect will perform and at 20 p.m., also on Thursday, in the Plaza de los Algodoneros there will be the Los Gofiones concert.

 

Also on Thursday, in the morning (from 10 a.m. to 14 p.m.) and in the afternoon (from 16 p.m. to 20 p.m.) in the pedestrian zone there will be Club Play, plow lifting, arm wrestling and stone lifting and shepherd's jump by the La Revoliá collective.

 

On Friday, May 31, from 16 to 20 p.m. in Parque de Santa Lucía there will be family games led by Gato Engrifao. From 19 to 23 p.m., also in the Santa Lucía Park, there will be Taifa Dance with the Santa Lucía de Tira-Jana Dance Corps Cultural Association, the Parranda del Cura and the Parranda La Polvajera
