The PMM will have a cost of 966.812 euros, of which €667.000 will come from the Government of the Canary Islands

Davinia Ramírez, Councilor for Urban Planning: “After the financial allocation, the agreement can be signed so that Gesplan can draft the document”

Alejandro Marichal: “The new regulatory document will increase the competitiveness of our tourist destination, recover land for new economic activities, encourage investment and generate employment”

The Urban Planning Department of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council will propose in the next ordinary plenary session to be held on Thursday, June 06, a budget modification of 90.000 euros, as well as the spending commitment of 100.000 euros for 2025 and the same amount by 2026, to contribute the 290.000 euros that must be paid to the council so that Gesplan can proceed with the drafting of the Plan for Modernization, Improvement and Increased Competitiveness of Maspalomas Costa Canaria.

After the meeting held last April between the Territorial Policy team of the Government of the Canary Islands, headed by Manuel Miranda; and the Urban Planning team of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, led by Alejandro Marichal; It was agreed to reinvigorate said PMM, which will have a cost of 966.812 euros, of which 290.000 euros must be contributed by the local executive and almost 667.000 will come from the Government of the Canary Islands. The first deputy mayor, Alejandro Marichal, highlights that with this budget modification “the first step is being taken to draft the regulatory umbrella that will allow, among other aspects, to promote the renovation of obsolete shopping centers that have been sitting in the offices since 2021. ”. For her part, the Councilor for Urban Planning, Davinia Ramírez, details that after the financial achievement "the agreement can be signed so that Gesplan can draft the document."

The objectives set out in the Plan for Modernization, Improvement and Increased Competitiveness of Maspalomas are based on very defined lines of work. On the one hand, it will allow offering urban incentives that promote the reform of the accommodation and commercial floor, for example, allowing greater buildability or regulating and planning the free spaces of plots. On the other hand, the document will include an expansion of the uses allowed in commercial plots so that they are compatible with accommodation, social-health or sports uses, among others. Thirdly, it would allow the specialization of the use of the plots, making it possible to make residential use on tourist land compatible.

The PMM editorial team has suffered several judicial setbacks. The document approved in 2012 was annulled by different rulings of the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands in 2016; For this reason, in 2020, when Alejandro Marichal assumed the Department of Urban Planning, he asked the Department of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning of the Government of the Canary Islands to prepare and process a new PMM and it was agreed to commission Gesplan with the report. of viability. After the dismissal of Marichal in 2021 and “like almost all the projects that we left on the table to the previous government, this one did not materialize.” For these reasons, the current local government has had to begin the procedures and the first deputy mayor is now confident that during the summer the agreement will be signed that would allow the drafting of the Modernization Plan and that from this "we can count with an increase in the competitiveness not only of our tourist destination, but also of Gran Canaria; recover land to use for economic activities demanded by neighbors, businessmen and tourists; encourage private investment and thereby generate jobs,” concludes Marichal.
