'World Environment Day' reforesting San Agustín

 

Mayor Marco Aurelio Pérez Sánchez demonstrated this Wednesday his agility and skills with the sacho when planting an olive tree, in a one-on-one with the manager of Canaragua, Jaime Planells Chicharro, in the first reforestation action that the San City Council Bartolomé de Tirajana has set out in the green area of ​​Puerto Escondido, in the heights of San Agustín.

 

The planting was promoted by the Department of Parks and Gardens directed by councilors Araceli Armas Cruz and Eduardo Armas Herrera, to commemorate World Environment Day, and was carried out with the active collaboration of about fifty students from the El Tablero institutes. and Amurga, and two students from the intermediate degree cycle in Gardening and Floristry at the IES Faro de Maspalomas who are doing their internships at the municipal institution. 

 

 

This is the first reforestation action carried out in the green area of ​​Puerto Escondido, and is part of the environmental recovery project planned by the City Council and the Canarian Foundation for Reforestation (Foresta), within the framework of the plan agreement. of employment that both signed in the middle of last January.

 

To proceed with this first plantation, the agents of this employment plan have been operating in the area, which covers almost one hectare of land, since last March 17. The foreman of the works, Alexis Munguía, describes that “no one has entered here for more than 15 years, because it was a forest that could not be entered due to the height of the hill and other grasses that reached to the waist, in addition to due to the numerous dry bushes and bushes and the enormous amount of fallen palm leaves on the ground and not pruned.” In this regard, Forest Engineer Jorge Rodríguez Perera states that the cleaning work will continue for at least two more weeks, and that in the end about 30 tons of plant waste will have been removed from the area as a result of the clearing, pruning and cleaning that are being carried out by the workers of the agreement.

 

 

 

The first reforestation plantation in Puerto Escondido, grateful and appreciated by the neighbors who live in the area "because they have cleaned and opened the roads", has been carried out with about sixty specimens of cardons, wild olive trees, mastic trees, mastic trees and sweet tabaibas. Supported and guided by the municipal staff of Parks and Gardens and the Forestry technicians and operators, it was the students themselves who were in charge of opening the pots with a pick or sacho, of preparing the soil substrates, and finally of digging into the plants and providing them with a settlement irrigation with buckets of water.

 

The commemorative activity for World Environment Day carried out with the young people included a talk to them by engineer Rodríguez Perera about the importance of said celebration, the geography and ecosystems of Gran Canaria, the evolution of the forest masses in the Island, the importance of the environment and the forest mass for the Canary Islands, and the actions that young people themselves can carry out to collaborate in environmental protection.

 

“With this reforestation plantation we have sought to raise awareness and motivate people, especially young people, to become active agents of sustainable development,” says Araceli Armas.
