The Intermunicipal Association of the Southeast of Gran Canaria presented this Thursday, June 06 at the Teatro Auditorio de Agüimes, the 17th Edition of the International Seminar on Sustainable Regions, which this year will focus on “Water Security and Efficiency”.
The event will take place on June 17 and 18 in the same theater, where different speakers will present their knowledge on the subject. Present at the presentation were the President of the Commonwealth and Mayor of the municipality of Agüimes, Mr. Óscar Hernández Suárez; the Mayor of the Ingenio City Council, Mrs. Vanesa Martín Herrera, and the Mayor of the Santa Lucía de Tirajana City Council, Mr. Francisco García López.
This initiative was born in 2006 in order to draw attention to the need to promote actions, policies, strategies, and the need to incorporate sustainability in all areas of our lives. This year's theme responds to the reality of one of the most urgent challenges of the present, especially in islands like the Canary Islands, which is none other than the sustainable management of water, overcoming challenges such as increasing the performance of our hydraulic networks or the shortage of water. It is imperative to share knowledge, strategies, challenges and innovative technologies that promote the production, distribution, management, efficient and responsible use of water. Therefore, this meeting will bring together different experts and researchers to discuss practical solutions and effective policies.
The seminar is divided into two days that will take place as follows:
On Monday, June 17, issues focused on "Water Security" will be addressed
The opening ceremony will take place at 18:00 p.m. by the President of the Commonwealth, Mr. Oscar Hernández Suárez, accompanied by Ms. Vanesa Martín Herrera and Mr. Francisco García López. Following this, Ms. Maria Madalena Fugaréu , Director of Water and Waste Distribution of Madeira, SA (ARM), will present her paper, “Sustainability in water management in the Autonomous Region of Madeira – Main Issues.”
At 19:15 p.m., a round table discussion will be held with the participation of Mr. Marcos José Lorenzo Martín, Deputy Minister of Territorial Cohesion and Water of the Government of the Canary Islands; Mr. Carmelo Santana Delgado, Manager of the Gran Canaria Island Water Council; Mr. Javier Davara Méndez, Manager of the Tenerife Island Water Council; Mr. Enrique Moreno Deus, Head of the Water Department of the Directorate General for Territorial Policy and Water of the Government of the Canary Islands; Ms. María del Carmen Cabrera Santana, PhD in Geology from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; and Ms. Maria Madalena Fugaréu. The event will conclude at 20:00 p.m.
On Tuesday, June 18, the theme of the day will be “Water Efficiency”
The event will begin at 18:00 PM with the first presentation by Mr. José Luis López López, Head of Digital Transformation at EMASESA, who will speak on “The Digital Reservoir 5.0: EMASESA’s Digital Transformation .” Following his presentation, Mr. Alejandro Suaña González, Project Manager at ACCIONA, will speak on “The Impact of Modernization and Pressure Management in Water Networks .” At approximately 19:40 PM, a roundtable discussion will begin with the participation of Mr. José Juan González Salmah, CEO of CANARAGUA; Ms. Mercedes Fernández-Couto Gómez, CEO of EMALSA; along with José Luis López López and Alejandro Suaña González. The closing ceremony will follow the roundtable discussion.

The president of the Commonwealth, Mr. Óscar Hernández, assured that the objective of this Seminar is to “deepen the analysis and assessment of the issues that will modify the behavior in the future of this planet, raise awareness among citizens of the need for sustainability and care of the environment.”
“We have one more subject that I passed in water matters. When we formed the Southeastern Commonwealth, necessity forced us to find a formula to guarantee the survival of this region. The scarcity of water resources and the pressure to which public institutions were subjected by the lieutenants made it necessary to look for alternative solutions. This solution was to desalinate water and we are pioneers in Gran Canaria and the Archipelago, receiving many recognitions at an international level,” highlighted the President. “In this seventeenth edition, the region continues to focus on raising awareness among citizens about caring for and respecting the planet we live on,” concluded Hernández.
The Mayor of Ingenio, Vanesa Martín, comments that "these sessions are aimed at neighbors, public and private entities, and technical personnel, who want to acquire knowledge about more sustainable water management so that it arrives as clean as possible and can be reused." . “For Ingenio it is a pleasure to be leading, together with the other two municipalities, these types of seminars that not only raise awareness but also investigate and provide us with tools to solve the current problems that exist in the world, such as water management due to the lack of rain,” the councilor stressed.
For his part, the Mayor of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Francisco García, points out that “this year the issue to be discussed is water due to the water crisis in which we are immersed, about which the Government of the Canary Islands is very concerned and determined “Zones have already been declared in water emergency.” “In this sense, our municipalities are strengthened because we have worked together to have a desalination plant in the southeastern region that guarantees water for human and agricultural consumption. The three mayors agree to expand it with 5000 more cubic meters per day, which will mean a production of 37000 cubic meters of water,” García indicated.
