The Pancho Guerra Canarian Foundation and the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council commemorated this Tuesday, June 11, a new anniversary of the birth of the Tirajan writer Francisco Guerra Navarro (Pancho Guerra) 115 years ago (1909)
In the tribute held in Tunte, precisely in the Cultural Center that bears the author's name, 41 sixth-grade students from CEIP Carlos Socas of Ingenio, 33 Primary students from CEO Tunte, and fifteen members of the Verseadora Clotilde Cruz Peña School participated. from the Ochosílabas Foundation and a large group of students from the ULPGC training programs.
The event was directed and coordinated by the speaker Yeray Rodríguez. “We continue celebrating Pancho Guerra's birthday because creators and artists never die. His works remain as the best inheritance and testimony that they are still with us. To Pancho Guerra, to his overflowing imagination and ideas, we owe infinite gratitude,” he stated at the opening.
The second deputy mayor and councilor responsible for the municipal area of Education and Culture, Elena Álamo Vega, spoke on behalf of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council. She welcomed the participants and thanked the Pancho Guerra Foundation for its constant work in defense of the figure and work of the writer from Tirajana. “Today is a day of joy and festivity because we celebrate a birthday that cannot go unnoticed in our municipality in honor of our Pancho Guerra. We thank the Foundation for the ties and links with our city council, constantly supporting us so that we do not let ourselves go in the task and responsibility that we all have to preserve our culture and our authors,” she stated.
The president of the Canarian Pancho Guerra Foundation, Miguel Guerra García de Celis, also emphasized that “we cannot stop remembering the creators who have given us an extraordinary cultural legacy. Pancho Guerra contributed and bequeathed to the Canarian culture novels, poetry, songs, journalism and something fundamental such as his work so that the lexicon and the way of speaking of our land were not lost, as a way of thinking, feeling and doing. which is recognized as one of the 9 varieties of Spanish spoken in the world.” He also thanked Yeray Rodríguez for having the idea three years ago to institutionalize the celebration of this anniversary.
The commemorative event consisted of different interventions dedicated to the artistic-literary creativity of the writer, which were played in the background by the cellist Thania Cantallops, the flutist Adriana Medina, the singer Thania Gil and Yeray Rodríguez himself on the strings. They were the ones who opened the event by dedicating a “very special” 'Aires of Lima' to the memory of Pancho Guerra (Pancho, how lucky we are to be able to read you/ to meet you/and with us too).
CEO Tunte's students read one of Pepe Monagas' stories and sang two tenths dedicated to the writer, one of them printed on the walls of the educational center's patio. The students of the CEIP Carlos Socas offered a nod to the Canarian lexicon that the writer protected in his works, such as bienmesabe, prevenciones, enyesque, aguachirre, correillo or baifo, which “is the son of the goat until it stops suckling,” and they sang also a few tenths extracted from the work of Pancho Guerra. The narrator Elisenda Romano read two representative poetic fragments from the novels Memorias de Pepe Monagas and Tres Lunas Rojas, and one of his famous stories versioned in tenths by several Canarian authors, specifically 'From when Pepe Monagas attended the reading of a drama by Esteban Pachecho'. For their part, the members of the Escuela Verseadora de Ochosílabas offered a cluster of their own compositions dedicated to the memory and work of the writer.
