The National Police have arrested three people in Lloret de Mar and Sant Hilari Sacalm (Selva) for the scam of the son with problems and which has generated a parallel complaint for scam in Maspalomas. The investigation began following a complaint from one of the victims who had been robbed of more than 17.000 euros.
The National Police asks for "caution" with this type of crime and to remain calm in case of receiving messages of this type. The 'modus operandi' of the scammers is to continue asking victims for money, taking advantage of their concern for supposed children or nephews. The scam begins with the mass sending of messages through instant messaging applications.
The perpetrators posed as relatives and, from an unusual telephone number, requested various financial amounts (between 2.000 and 3.000 euros) to resolve an urgent financial problem. The victims are usually people between 65 and 80 years old, with immediate family members outside the home. When in doubt, send them the money before trying to contact their usual phone number or by any other means. In total, those arrested pocketed almost 45.000 euros.
One of the three detainees allegedly defrauded up to five people from various parts of Madrid, Cádiz, Córdoba, Maspalomas and Valencia with a total of 35.000 euros. Between the three of them, they would have defrauded 44.800 euros. The group of the Specialized and Violent Crime Unit (UDEV) of Girona has taken charge of the arrests of the authors, solving the eight scams.
