The International Seminar on Sustainable Regions of the Southeast of Gran Canaria begins

A new edition of the International Seminar on Sustainable Regions lands in the southeastern region of Gran Canaria to address a topical topic such as “Water Security and Efficiency”. The event is taking place at the Agüimes Auditorium Theater, starting its first day this Monday, June 17, and bringing together experts and local leaders to address one of the most pressing challenges of our time: sustainable water management.

 

To begin with, the official opening of the seminar took place. At the event, Mr. Óscar Hernández Suárez, President of the Southeast Commonwealth and Mayor of Agüimes; accompanied by Mrs. Vanesa Martín Herrera, Mayor of Ingenio, and Francisco García López, Mayor of Santa Lucía de Tirajana; He welcomed everyone present, highlighting the importance of inter-municipal collaboration to face environmental challenges, through the experiences of experts who “will offer their vision to guarantee this basic service for life.”

 

 

Sustainability, the great challenge

 

Ms. Maria Madalena Fugaréu, Director of Distribution and Drainage of Water and Waste of Madeira (ARM), starred in the first intervention, an expert on the subject with her presentation “Sustainability in water management in the Autonomous Region of Madeira – Main Challenges” in which he addressed water management in an area similar to the Canary Islands in terms of geography, population and climate. Likewise, she explained the main challenges and strategies implemented in Madeira to guarantee sustainable water management. 

 

Water Security under debate

 

The day continued with the development of the round table dedicated to water security, moderated by Mr. Gilberto Martel Rodríguez, Head of Section of the Water Department of the ITC, and with the participation of Mr. Enrique Moreno Deus, Head of Technical Services of the General Directorate of Water of the Government of the Canary Islands; Mr. Javier Davara Méndez, Manager of the Tenerife Water Island Council; Mr. Carmelo Santana Delgado, Manager of the Insular Water Council of Gran Canaria, Mrs. María del Carmen Cabrera Santana, from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the speaker Mrs. Maria Madalena Fugaréu.

 

In this debate, various perspectives on water management were discussed, including technological innovation, long-term planning and cooperation between institutions. Each speaker contributed their experience and knowledge, generating an enriching exchange of ideas and strategies.

 

This day culminated in a renewed commitment from all actors involved to work together in the search for sustainable solutions for water management, thus ensuring a safer and more prosperous future for the Southeast Region and the island of Gran Canaria.

 

The International Seminar on Sustainable Regions will continue this Tuesday, June 18, focusing the debate on water efficiency to complement the synergies shared during the first session and merge both for sustainable and effective water management in a geographical location affected by climate change such as It is the Canary Islands.
