“Sealed by the Civil Guard”: What happens to this Neighborhood business?

 

For weeks now, the residents of Vecindario who walk along Canalejas Street, in the vicinity of Avenida de Canarias, have been asking the same question: What has happened to the flea market?

 

They refer to the flea market located in front of the Red Cross, one of the oldest businesses in the area and whose services ranged from second-hand sales to home delivery of furniture collection.

 

 

According to the neighbors, the closure came from one day to the next without prior notice and days later they were surprised by the Civil Guard seal without knowing the reason. Something that has continued until this week, where the reason for the closure has finally been revealed.

 

Far from being something related to the establishment located in Santa Lucía de Tirajana, the reason fully involves the leadership of the business owners. The flea market belongs to the NGO Remar, which has other establishments of the same style in Telde and Las Palmas, although in the south of the island they only have the Vecindario one.

 

This week the investigation into the leadership of this NGO for alleged labor exploitation of 5 women who were in a vulnerable situation was made public. The NGO helped drug addicts with their addiction, offering social and psychological support and helping them reintegrate into the world of work.

 

 

This issue is what, according to investigations, would have led to alleged labor exploitation by the leadership of five women, who have declared that they lived with their children in a garage in Telde and that they performed various tasks as domestic workers. and caregivers of the children of two of those investigated from the NGO leadership.

 

They carried out all of these tasks without being registered with Social Security, without receiving any type of remuneration and under the threat of being left on the street if they did not follow their orders.

 

The four investigated are free pending trial and, as a precautionary measure, the seizure of assets and the sealing of the six Remar establishments on the island, including Vecindario, have been ordered.
