The tourist travel think tank European Waterways issued a warning this Wednesday noting that bringing meat or dairy products from the United Kingdom to Gran Canaria could result in a fine for travelers. These new regulations are part of stricter biosecurity measures implemented by the EU to prevent the spread of animal diseases in island territories such as Gran Canaria.
The notice is especially aimed at passengers flying with Jet2, Ryanair, Easyjet and TUI as they prepare for their summer holidays in the south of Gran Canaria. Sparkes added: "These sandwiches are safe to consume at the airport and on the plane, but should be discarded before getting off the flight or as soon as you enter the terminal on the other side. To avoid fines or potential criminal prosecution, ensure that no meat products or dairy enters the EU".
"Upon arriving in the EU with Gran Canaria being part of it, you may have to undergo official controls by the authorities. If you bring undeclared meat or dairy products, they will be confiscated and destroyed. In addition, the tourist may be fined or face a criminal process" on the island, he said. "You can carry animal products when traveling within the EU. However, most EU countries have strict regulations on the transport of endangered animals or plants, or products derived from them, and in some cases , a permit may be required."
