The Rotary Club Maspalomas International Peace Camp celebrates its tenth edition, once again transforming southern Gran Canaria into a hub of coexistence, peace, and solidarity. Around twenty young people from countries such as Finland, Bulgaria, and Turkey, as well as students from across the Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Islands (selected based on their academic performance), will spend a few days together participating in this summer program. The program aims to promote peace, friendship, and international understanding through educational, cultural, sporting, and recreational activities.
Every year, the Camp offers an interesting series of conferences to invite reflection on current issues. On this occasion the talks will revolve around cybercrime and the misuse of social networks, gender violence among women in Africa, an approach to the current conflict in Armenia and how the Rotary Foundation approaches programs in favor of La Paz .
Starting July 1st, the Casa Condal in San Fernando de Maspalomas will host the first conference meeting from 18:00 PM , with the panel “International cooperation and the empowerment of women in Africa (Senegal), key to sustainable development and global solidarity” and the talk given by Dr. Mónica Hathiramani Sánchez , “Research and working life an opportunity to grow”.
The opening ceremony will take place on Tuesday, July 2nd, starting at 10:30 a.m., with the participation of the Mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Marco Aurelio Pérez ; the Councilor for Institutional Cooperation and International Solidarity of the Gran Canaria Island Council, Carmelo Ramírez ; and the Governor of Rotary International District 2201, Luis Gómez Ojero . This will also be his first official appearance since his appointment.
The opening conference, on cyberviolence and cyberbullying, will be given by researcher and Civil Guard commander María José Garrido Antón, author of several books, most notably her novel "On People and Monsters," based on real investigations. This will be followed by a presentation on "The Cause of Armenia in the Context of Peace," by lawyer Emma Hakobyan.
On Wednesday, July 3rd at 18:00 PM , the workshop “The Rotary Foundation’s Commitment to Peacebuilding and Conflict Resolution: Its Programs” will be led by Ana Martin, a member of the Rotary Foundation’s technical advisory team, a Senior Telecommunications Engineer, and a Biomedical Engineer. On Thursday, July 4th, the Camp moves to Casa África with the lecture “Beyond the Numbers: A Sociocultural Analysis of African Migration Movements,” presented by Adama Aw , a Senegalese student at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria specializing in Afro-Hispanic literature, at 18:00 PM.
The 10th Rotary International Peace Camp of Maspalomas concludes on Friday at 6:00 PM at Casa Condal with a presentation by its director and president of the Rotary Club of Maspalomas, Daniel Bazán , who has spoken on five occasions . All conferences are open to the public until capacity is reached.
