The Government Council of the Canary Islands analyzes this Monday in Las Palmas the proposed agreement authorizing the urgent processing of the Draft Law on the sustainable management of tourist use of housing. The presence of homes dedicated to tourism in residential areas is not stopped, one of the demands of the Las Palmas hotel management association, which has entrepreneurs with vacation homes on its board.
The south of Gran Canaria is divided on this matter, although the government coalition formed by AV and CC never fooled anyone: its objective was to defend the apartment owners due to the ambiguity with which the hotel businessmen were moving with this matter. The employers thought that CC would not go to the local government to fulfill an electoral promise and they were wrong.
The norm is not going to correct another of the major defects detected that must be addressed with the new regulation is that this massive proliferation of holiday homes has developed in the opposite direction to the radical limitation of the growth of the plant destined for regulated tourist accommodation. The preamble of the regional agreement points out that "the need to intervene is revealed by establishing limits on the tourist use of housing" against "urban and territorial planning, distorting and collapsing the urban development model democratically approved by citizens, and in "total absence of specific tourism planning, which also puts the immediate future of employment, taxation, competitiveness and quality of the tourism sector at risk."
