The truth, which is the question that sometimes one asks

The truth is, that is the question that sometimes one asks. One can believe that it is in honor of some walled landowner from the time of the Conquest. But no: its origin must be sought in a plant: rosemary. "To the rosemary flower, green rosemary, if the rosemary dries it no longer blooms. It no longer blooms, it has already bloomed," said García Lorca, or so we have been told that he left it in writing. There are those who maintain that it is because of a fish called rosemary. But the latter seems ordinary to us.

The first information about Castillo de Romeral dates back to 1537 because the ships sailed close to the coast towards Africa in search of slaves or fishing. As the area was infected with pirates, approaching the coast of Castillo del Romeral was good to make some purchases such as salt.

In 1677 Carlos II gave money to build the Strong House of Santa Cruz del Romeral and the works started in 1681. That fortress located in Santa Cruz del Romeral was called Castle since the end of the 19th century. The colonel of the Telde regiment, Antonio Lorenzo de La Rocha Bethencourt, owner of the salt mines, lived in Santa Cruz del Romeral. In the will of March 1696, 7.500, Antonio Lorenzo states that he has "the salt mines, with the Castle and houses, which he had acquired by purchase, and in which he had invested XNUMX reales de vellón in the salt mines factory, house and cookers in the "Improvement lands". You already know the origin of the Lorenzos who live in the south of Gran Canaria. There are some rooms of the fortress standing, of which the walls and gable roof are preserved. Two are located inside private homes and one has an exit onto a street.
