Last weekend I shared with you an initial overview of the debate on the State of the Island that took place at the Island Council meeting on Thursday the 13th and Friday the 14th of this month. In the article "Gran Canaria Moving Forward," I presented the socioeconomic indicators of employment, social security affiliation, and business confidence that show a dynamic and active Gran Canaria experiencing balanced growth, which is helping to generate a productive economy and better social and economic conditions for its citizens.
As I have pointed out on other occasions, institutional stability is essential for the sustainable development and socioeconomic progress of a region. In Gran Canaria, the leadership of the Gran Canaria Island Council has demonstrated how consistent and committed management can transform an island, implementing long-term policies that benefit various sectors. This stability has facilitated the energy transition , water security, and the development of new economic sectors, making Gran Canaria a role model for sustainability and progress.
Gran Canaria has experienced unprecedented continuity of government since the beginning of the democratic period in 1979. This popular support for the island model promoted by Nueva Canarias and the Socialist Party reflects a confidence in political management that is rare in other contexts. While many regions face political changes and a lack of continuity, Gran Canaria has maintained a consistent management approach that has allowed for the implementation of long-term policies.
This stability has allowed for effective planning and execution of projects that require time and persistence. For example, the transition to a greener, more sustainable economy cannot be achieved in a single election cycle. It requires a long-term vision and constant commitment, something that the Gran Canaria administration has proven to have.
One of Gran Canaria's most significant achievements is its progress in the energy transition . The island has invested in infrastructure and technologies that promote the use of renewable energy, thus reducing its dependence on fossil fuels. Projects such as wind farms , solar plants, and self-consumption have been made possible thanks to strategic planning and consistent implementation.
The energy transition not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also has economic benefits. Job creation in the renewable energy sector is a clear example of how a green policy can boost the local economy. Furthermore, the reduction in costs associated with importing fossil fuels frees up resources that can be reinvested in other critical areas , such as education and healthcare. Today, this island leads the Canary Islands by a wide margin in clean energy penetration. It is also the territory with the greatest potential to advance towards the decarbonization demanded by the EU, thanks to the Salto de Chira hydroelectric project and offshore wind power.
Water management is another area where Gran Canaria has demonstrated outstanding leadership. Water security has been a priority, and the island has implemented innovative solutions to guarantee a sustainable water supply. This includes the construction of desalination plants and the use of advanced technologies for water recycling and reuse, as well as renewable energy production. Gran Canaria's ability to manage its water resources efficiently is crucial in the context of climate change . Droughts and climate variability make water availability a constant challenge. By investing in technologies and practices that ensure a stable and sustainable supply, the island is better prepared to face these challenges.
The focus on water security alsoén has economic implications. A reliable water supply is essential for sectors such as agriculture and tourism, which are pillars of the local economy. By ensuring access to water, Gran Canaria protects its economy and improves the quality of life of its inhabitants. Gran Canaria, compared to other territories, has not had to resort to the water emergency. Salto de Chira and 107 measures with 151 million euros of investment guarantee the water security of the island in the coming decades.
Economic diversification has been a key focus for Gran Canaria. The promotion of new economic sectors, such as the marine and maritime sector and information technologies, has generated employment opportunities and boosted innovation. The Marine and Maritime Innovation Center and the three High-Tech incubators are examples of projects that are revitalizing the local economy and attracting investment.
This sector has enormous potential in Gran Canaria due to its location.no geographyAfrica and its natural resources. Investments in port infrastructure, such as those in the Port of Taliarte, and in marine research are positioning the island as a center of excellence in this field. This not only diversifies the economy, but alsoén creates highly qualified jobs and promotes technological developmentgic.
Information technologies have also been a priority. The creation of technology parks and the attraction of ICT companies are fostering an innovation ecosystem. This sector not only offers well-paid jobs but also has a multiplier effect on the economy, promoting skills development and knowledge transfer.
Tourism continues to be a fundamental pillar of the economy of Gran Canaria. However, the island has adopted an approach towards more sustainable tourism. This includes the promotionn of prResponsible practices that minimize environmental impact and benefit local communities. Initiatives such as sustainability certification for hotels and promotionnumber of tourist activitiesistics that respect the natural environment are examples of this approach. It is no coincidence that we have increased turnover by 20%, an increase of 8,29% per client and a longer average length of stay, without increasing the number of tourists. And we maintained and continue to maintain that success cannot be measured in the unlimited arrival of visitors.
The circular economy is another key component of Gran Canaria's development model. It aims to reduce waste and maximize resource use through recycling , reuse, and material recovery. Gran Canaria has implemented advanced recycling programs and promoted business practices that minimize waste. This model benefits the environment, generates significant savings, and creates new business opportunities. Gran Canaria is the island that recycles the most; its eco-parks are state-of-the-art and produce their own energy.
The audiovisual sector has received a significant boost thanks to supportive policies and the creation of suitable infrastructure, such as film studios. The island has become an attractive destination for film and television production, diversifying the island's economy and promoting local culture and talent. Promoting Gran Canaria as a hub for the audiovisual industry has attracted international productions, generating employment and positioning the island on the global audiovisual production map .
Sustainable mobility is another area in which Gran Canaria has made significant progress. The implementation of an efficient public transport network and the promotion of electric vehicles are examples of policies aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of our island. The development of programs that encourage the use of public transport contributes to more sustainable mobility and improves the quality of life for residents. Passenger numbers have increased from 62 million to 92 million.
Housing policy has also been a central area of focus. Neighborhood rehabilitation projects have significantly improved the living conditions of many residents. These projects provide decent housing and promote social cohesion and urban revitalization. Collaboration between the Island Council and the municipalities has been crucial in identifying needs and developing effective housing solutions.
The improvement of road infrastructure is essential for the economic and social development of Gran Canaria. Road modernization and expansion projects have facilitated mobility within the island, reducing travel times and improving road safety. They benefit residents and are crucial for tourism and commerce, facilitating access to different areas of the island.
Food sovereignty is another essential aspect of the sustainable development of Gran Canaria. The promotion of local agriculture and support for farmers have strengthened food production on the island. This approach does not improve food security, supports the local economy and promotes sustainable agricultural practices. Gran Canaria is the only island that has not lost agricultural land but has gained 700 hectares, as is the case with vines, which have increased by 15 hectares in recent years and 10 in 2023.
The industrial and commercial sectors of Gran Canaria have been boosted through supportive policies and the creation of suitable infrastructure. More than €50 million has been invested in both areas. The modernization of industrial parks and the promotion of local commerce have generated employment and revitalized the economy. Collaboration with business associations and the implementation of training and support programs for entrepreneurs have been key to the growth of these sectors.
In short, Gran Canaria's institutional stability has been fundamental to its sustainable development and its capacity to face contemporary challenges . Continuity in management and long-term planning have enabled significant progress in the energy transition, water sovereignty, economic diversification , sustainable mobility, infrastructure improvements, and the promotion of industry and commerce. Gran Canaria stands as a model to follow, demonstrating that respect for the popular will and a comprehensive approach to governance can transform a region and prepare its society for a prosperous and sustainable future.
