Official opening of the X Rotary Maspalomas International Camp

 

Today the official opening of the , Carmelo Ramírez, the director of the Maspalomas Summer University, Guillermo Morales and the Governor of District 2201 Rotary International, Luis Gómez Ojero.

 

Gómez Ojero began his speech by pointing out that “Rotary has been and is a pioneer of peace and the defense of the Environment” since its inception, always following the philosophy that “every form of life is unique and deserves to be respected.” Gómez Ojero welcomed the young people of the Camp stating that “the Rotary Club of Maspalomas contributes in an exemplary way to goodwill and peace between nations.”

 

Marco Aurelio Pérez, mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, has pointed out that “Maspalomas is one of the few Rotary cities of peace in the world, celebrating an event like this for ten years places us as a global benchmark.”

 

 

 

The Councilor for International Cooperation and International Solidarity of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Carmelo Ramírez, has praised the Rotary Maspalomas club “very active not only in terms of emblematic events like this one, but throughout the year promoting projects and actions aimed at justice and the value of cooperation, especially in Africa.” Ramírez recalled that "more than 80 percent of humanity lives in poverty, more than 40 conflicts exist in the world today and the arms industry is located in rich countries but wars take place in poor countries."

 

Guillermo Morales, director of the Maspalomas Summer University, concluded by applauding the relationship between the University and the Camp, “which enriches us and highlights the common philosophy between both.”

 

The cybernetic and technological factor, very present in gender violence

 

The first conference of the day focused on cyberviolence and cyberbullying, given by the researcher and Civil Guard commander María José Garrido Antón, author of several books, among which her novel “On People and Monsters” stands out, about real investigations.

 

Garrido has highlighted the importance of knowing what happens and why it happens, the triggers of cases of gender violence, to “be able to protect women.” “Every day new forms of technological crimes emerge, everything moves very quickly and you have to know how to act.”

 

The speaker highlighted above all "the hidden number, numerous cases that are not reported due to fear, mistrust, shame" and especially in cyber violence "the unconscious number, the victim does not identify what it is", even when their partner opens their email , use a false identity to view their social networks, or control their mobile phone.

 

 

Next, the young people attending the Camp were able to listen to the talk “The Cause of Armenia in the Field of Peace”, with the lawyer of Armenian origin Emma Hakobyan. “I want these young people to develop their capacity for self-critical thinking, to learn to think for themselves. In them lies the power to change reality.” For Hakobyan, “it is up to young people to have the conscience to take a stand on what is good and correct;” and she has also assured that it is important to talk about the realities of places like Armenia to make them visible, “what happens in Armenia today could happen tomorrow in Spain.”
