The ridiculous conditions for joining a job at the Gran Canaria Airport have aroused the indignation of many users on social networks.
Are you from Gran Canaria, do you like tourism, working 12 hours a day and not having a single day a year without paying attention to work? Then you're in luck, because you have the opportunity to apply for the perfect job offer for you.
It seems like a joke or the conditions of a totally precarious job in the service sector, but no. This is an offer to join as a Public Relations and Social Media Consultant at Gran Canaria Airport for the German consulting firm specialized in luxury tourism Kleber Group, with more than 3 decades of experience in the sector and offices in Switzerland, Germany and Madrid.
The offer, published by the consultancy, seeks “a great Public Relations Consultant to make 'waves' in the world of travel, luxury and lifestyle” and among the functions of the position we can find some such as writing notes of press, creation of content for social networks or the provision of a daily summary of the press in the Canary Islands.
Responsibilities that are common for the position offered, the extraordinary comes with the working and salary conditions of the position. The hours of service provision are in person, from Monday to Friday and “between 8:00 a.m. and 18:00 p.m.”; That is, 10 hours of face-to-face work in which, to fall within the norm, they would have to grant the worker 2 hours of rest during the day.
In this sense, it is worth remembering that the Ministry of Labor is in the midst of a negotiating process with social agents, employers and unions to reduce the working day to 37,5 hours a week (7 and a half hours of work per day on 5 days a week ).
However, the issue does not stop there with the schedule since, as the offer indicates, after their 10-hour in-person shift, the worker must provide telephone support until 20:00 p.m., making a total of 12 hours of work per day. and 60 hours per week.
And no, it doesn't stop there either. The offer also indicates that on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays the service will be provided by telephone using an on-call mobile. That is, apart from the 60 hours of work per week, both weekends and holidays you must have full availability.
Seeing this situation, it could be presumed that the salary will also meet these extraordinary requirements and will be well above what is received on average in the archipelago, but nothing could be further from the truth; The annual salary is 20.500 euros, of which 18.000 correspond to the gross salary and 2.500 to “compensation for guards”.
That is, the gross annual salary is 2.624 euros above the SMI prorated in 14 payments (15.876 euros) and more than 2.000 euros below the average annual salary in the Canary Islands, which in 2022 was 23.096,92 euros and the second lowest at the national level.
Regarding those 2.500 euros of compensation for guard duty on weekends and holidays, taking into account that in 2024 there are a total of 104 weekend days (52 Saturdays and 52 Sundays) and the work calendar includes a total of 12 holidays (116 days in total), the remuneration per guard would be 21,55 euros, a much lower figure if we take into account those two hours a day in which service would have to be provided by telephone for 2 hours after the workday.
Of course, this job requires a degree in Journalism, Marketing or Communication, command of English, a solid knowledge of social networks and “being detail-oriented.”
The outrage at this offer has been such that the tiktokers specialized in the world of work Mimi Olivan has echoed it on her social networks cataloging the advertisements as “the dream offer to work in the Canary Islands” and accumulating more than 80.000 views and nearly 150 comments, the vast majority showing their surprise at an offer of these characteristics and ironizing it with comments such as: “I thought the salary was monthly” or “they only need to put as a benefit in the offer that in Gran Canaria the sun gives you and gives you vitamin D.”
Many also proposed writing to the email address included in the offer to point out all irregularities.
Despite the surreal nature of the offer, after 3 days published on the main international job portal it already has 23 applications.
