The Minister of Environment, Climate, Energy and Knowledge of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Raúl García Brink, and the director of the Insular Energy Council (CIEGC), Alexis Lozano, held this Monday the first institutional meeting of the ImpulsaMaspalomas project and advance necessary aspects to be able to start developing it after this summer. The Tourism Sustainability Plan contemplates actions such as the installation of photovoltaic panels in parking lots and public infrastructure on beaches, the reduction of light pollution and water consumption, the installation of charging points for electric vehicles or the construction of a bicycle lane. on the Meloneras promenade.
The Minister of Environment, Climate, Energy and Knowledge of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Raúl García Brink, explained that ImpulsaMaspalomas will improve the sustainability parameters throughout the Maspalomas area "through innovative actions that will also improve the competitiveness of the destination."
García Brink maintained that at this time the project is already adjusted to European demands. "We have already delivered the project fully refined and complying with all the requirements that Europe demands and now our objective is to start working on it," and announced that after the summer a technical office will be put out to tender for a period of three years and an amount of 400.000 euros to execute this project.
The general objective of ImpulsaMaspalomas is to improve the capacity of the so-called resilience of the tourist area of Maspalomas Costa Canaria in the short and medium term, mainly through the enhancement of the existing natural heritage and the tourist resource of the dunes as a backbone. . In this way, the green reputation of the island's most important tourist destination will be improved through a proposal in which sustainability and digital transformation are combined to enrich its tourist products.
This project has had the collaboration of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, Turismo Gran Canaria, the Environment Department of the Cabildo, the Economic Promotion Society of Gran Canaria, the Society for the Development of Telecommunications of Gran Canaria, the Institute Tecnológico de Canarias, Canaragua and the Maspalomas Gran Canaria Consortium and has 100% financing through Next Generation funds for its 5,5 million euro budget.
The environmental restoration of the Maspalomas Dunes Special Reserve will also be carried out, waste management will be improved with special attention to the beaches and urban drainage will be carried out to reduce and treat stormwater runoff in the Maspalomas Pond environment. . In addition, the use of renewable energy sources will be promoted in infrastructures that provide tourist services and the saturation of the destination will be reduced through the use of sustainable mobility.
