The municipal oil mill closes the harvest with the grinding of 15 thousand kilos and nearly 2.000 liters of high quality oil

The municipality participates this year in the VI Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition of Gran Canaria, which is celebrated on December 2 with a tasting open to the public.

The municipal oil mill of Villa de Ingenio closes this year's olive harvest with 15 thousand kilos of ground olives, which have produced nearly 2.000 liters of excellent quality oil. A total of 80 farmers have made use of this service, which put their machines into operation at the end of September.

 

The good results obtained this year have motivated the municipality to participate again in the VI Official Competition for Extra Virgin Olive Oil of Gran Canaria 2021, with which the Cabildo of Gran Canaria promotes and disseminates among citizens the cultivation of the olive tree and its products, in addition to promoting the quality of the Island's oils, through competition between producers and producers, in addition to recognizing their work and effort.

 

The collection of the samples will be carried out at the Agrarian Extension and Agricultural and Fisheries Development Service of the Insular Corporation, and the tasting, which will be open to the public, will be held on December 2. The best extra virgin olive oil from Gran Canaria will receive a prize of 2.000 euros, and the second and third classified will receive 500 and 300 euros, respectively, and a distinction will be awarded for the Best Image and Presentation.

 

The olives produced in the municipality are mostly of the Verdial variety from Huévar, Picual, Arbequina and Hojiblanca and the olive trees that are distributed in different areas of the municipality.  

 

The Councilor for Agriculture, Livestock, Commerce and Crafts, Catalina Sánchez, highlights that "the producers have followed all the guidelines of the advice given by the area's technicians, and this has meant that we have a high quality oil, in addition to having the olives a much higher performance than previous years.” The councilor also thanked the farmers for “the trust placed in our oil mill to bring their olives and obtain their extra virgin olive oil.” According to the agreements with the farmers, the City Council keeps 20% of the oil obtained from each producer who uses the municipal oil mill, which is intended for the promotion of the municipality of Villa de Ingenio's own brand of oil. in different gastronomic and tourist fairs and markets.
