The south of Gran Canaria is about to sell out everything in terms of accommodation in the month of August. Hotel occupancy in Maspalomas is expected to reach levels close to 95% during August, a figure similar to that of previous years. 4 and 5 star hotels will see the highest occupancy rates, while 2 and 3 star resorts will also see good demand. Advance reservations are recommended, especially for weekends and popular dates such as those around August 15. Despite the increase in tourism, crime rates in the south of Gran Canaria remain below the Spanish average.
The highest prices will be found in 4 and 5 star hotels, while 3 star hotels will be cheaper. Tourism is expected to generate an economic impact of more than 500 million euros in Maspalomas during the month of August. In 2023, the average daily expenditure per tourist in Maspalomas in August reached 169 euros, being above the regional and national average. Tourists who visit Maspalomas usually spend above average, especially on accommodation, restaurants, leisure activities and shopping. The highest spending segments in Maspalomas are 4 and 5 star hotels, gourmet restaurants and high-end product stores.
Increased tourism also carries risks. In the first months of 2024, a slight increase in the number of crimes reported in the south of Gran Canaria has been observed, compared to the same period of the previous year. Not all types of crimes have experienced the same increase. There have been considerable increases in crimes such as sexual assaults, violent robberies and drug trafficking, while others such as home burglaries have decreased. The crimes with the greatest increase are sexual assaults (+27% compared to 2023); Robbery with violence +32,4% compared to 2023 and drug trafficking an increase of 41,8% compared to 2023.
