Pain in the south of Gran Canaria due to the departure of Feluco

A brave one. He deserted ties and imported fashions because he was a patriot. He was from the south of Gran Canaria, in a historical period marked by the confluence of some of the most distinguished historians of our time, and a participant in the Spanish Transition, he has left us an irreparable void with his departure. Feluco, without a doubt, one of the last exponents of the generation of post-war historians from Tunte, held the most prestigious chair that a tirajanero could desire: that of universal canary. He died at 12.45:61 p.m. while shopping in a supermarket, from a heart attack at the age of XNUMX. He collapsed. He came relaxed because shortly before he had been in the passion that he liked after the family: explaining his knowledge in a simple way in Radio Dunas, of which he was a distinguished collaborator. Married with a 26-year-old son, a pure tirajanero, he lived in Tunte. This afternoon in Tunte is his mourning before proceeding to the burial of his remains. The Sepca union, that of public employees, has expressed its dismay at the unforeseen nature of these deaths that are occurring every now and then among such young people after Covid19. The City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana has expressed municipal pain and declared the suspension of institutional events related to the days leading up to Santiago de Tunte.

His work, admirable and exceptional, has been recognized both in the south of Gran Canaria and in Maspalomas24H, a medium for which he was editorial coordinator of historical content for the southern region and Gran Canaria as a whole. Feluco dedicated his research work to one of the great themes of universal history: the Tirajana of the Conquest, the working Tirajana and the county Tirajana. His work was characterized by a meticulous and detailed analysis of diverse peoples and aspects, covering the hegemonic power in the south of Gran Canaria, as well as its spiritual, moral, cultural and linguistic framework (Catholicism, art, literature, universities, cartography, capacity military and naval, religious and civil architecture, publications,...). In short, Feluco bequeathed us a study of a true and differentiated civilization.

Although the origin of Feluco's interest in this topic could have been rooted in curiosity, as is usually the case, the truth is that his deep knowledge of the history of Tunte allowed him to quickly glimpse the multiple dimensions and possibilities that his great subject – the Tirajana between the 15th and 20th centuries, coinciding with the beginnings of tourism in the south of the island – offered for general knowledge. In this way, his work transcends local history, delving into the analysis of the government structures of the Hispanic imperial monarchy, the political and social framework of the Court, the institutional figure of the Tunte mediator, the masters over the southerners who came from Las Palmas to command the humble people of the region over the tomato sector, municipal expansion and tourism, and the fight for the hegemony of the Canarians against cultural invaders.

A man of exquisite affability, courtesy and simplicity in his treatment, Feluco more than deserved all the recognition he received in life. His legacy goes beyond his work, since he knew how to create a true historiographic school: he gathered around himself and his work (themes, interpretations, thesis) a splendid group of disciples and collaborators, both Canarian and like southerners and tirajaneros. The Canary Islands and Tunte's historiography will always be indebted to Feluco. Thanks to your work.–measured, balanced, profound, accurate and impeccable– we know, from the necessary perspectives and in its true dimension, Tirajana in its era of plenitude within modern history.
