The inspections in the different establishments and street sales resulted in the seizure of 2.762 counterfeit clothing and items.

The Civil Guard in Gran Canaria, in collaboration with the European Industrial and Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) within the European framework to combat fraud and piracy, in the months of June and July investigated five people for a crime against industrial property, by distributing counterfeit clothing in different points of sale on the island of Gran Canaria.

The Civil Guard learned of the facts after receiving a complaint from the representatives of the affected brands that have been continually punished for the illicit trade of this type of counterfeit clothing and articles in different parts of the island, causing serious economic damage to the brands.

For this reason, the Fiscal and Border Patrols of Neighborhood and Santa María de Guía, supported by expert experts in industrial property, carried out two inspections at a street market, two inspections at wholesale warehouses and an inspection at a bazaar in Playa Amadores in the municipalities of Telde, Agüimes and Mogán, resulting in the sale of luxury bags, glasses, leather goods and clothing, all of which were counterfeit and subject to industrial property rights, in industrial warehouses, shops and weekly markets.

After the inspections carried out, a total of 2.762 counterfeit garments and articles were seized, after the corresponding certification by the responsible expert in which it was verified that they were indeed counterfeits, valued at 1.590.950,00 euros.

This type of action not only affects the brand owners, but sometimes serves to finance criminal organizations. Coupled with the low quality of the manufacturing materials and the exploitation of the people who make them, which usually takes place in third countries.

The seized articles along with those investigated were made available to the Court of Guard of San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Telde respectively.
