The hospitality sector will be awarded in events in honor of its patron saint, Santa Marta

Maspalomas Costa Canaria recovers the celebration of Santa Marta in honor of the Hospitality Industry. This has been announced by the Department of Tourism of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council and the organizing associations, among which the Spanish Association of Hotel Managers and Other Entities (ASEGO), the Autonomous Association of Bartenders of the Canary Islands and the Association of Cooks stand out. Pastry chefs and bakers, Jilorio, who presented the commemorative events this Thursday morning in honor of Santa Marta, patron saint of hospitality.

Throughout Spain, the festival of Santa Marta is an occasion to honor and recognize the importance of this professional sector vital to the country's economy and culture. For this reason, on July 29 of each year, the Catholic and Orthodox Churches celebrate Saint Martha, patron saint of cooks, housekeepers, housewives, laundresses, hoteliers, bartenders, waiters and governesses, among other positions in the sector. Among the events that have been organized by the Department of Tourism of the southern municipality, to celebrate this holiday on July 29, are a religious service, at 18:00 p.m., and a delivery of non-perishable products, provided by the different chains hotels, to the image of Santa Marta in the El Salvador Ecumenical Temple, in Playa del Inglés. 

 

In addition, this 2024 there will be the XNUMXst edition of the Santa Marta Canary Hospitality Awards for the most outstanding professionals in each sector (hotel chains, maids sector, sector suppliers, waiters, cooks, bartenders, governesses and technical services, among others). Also worth noting is the holding of a Cooking Show by the Jilorio Association, from which the first Maspalomas Costa Canaria dish will be born. While the Bartender Association will create a cocktail that will have the same name. There will also be a tasting of Canarian products and a performance by a musical group. 

 

The commemorative event was presented by the first deputy mayor of the San Bartolomé City Council, Alejandro Marichal; the Councilor for Tourism, Yilenia Vega, and the member of ASEGO in the Canary Islands, Ciona Ramírez; who were accompanied by the president of the Autonomous Association of Bartenders of the Canary Islands, Antonio García Doblas; the president of the Jilorio Association, Ivonne Hernández González; as well as the collaborator who will serve as master of ceremony, on July 29, Antonio Garzón.

 

“Today is a very special day for the Department of Tourism and for our municipality because with the events we present we are going to value hospitality professionals,” said Alejandro Marichal, who highlighted that “every year on this date celebrates Santa Marta and we hold a religious service and a floral offering, but this year we wanted to improve this event and recognize all hospitality professionals with the 1st Canary Islands Santa Marta Hospitality Awards, since thanks to their effort and “With our work we have managed to position Maspalomas Costa Canaria as one of the most important tourist destinations in the Canary Islands and Spain,” Marichal highlighted.

 

Yilenia Vega explained that “Ciona knocked on our door, presenting us with a very nice and very necessary project for the sector in a few days in which we try to give tourists a message that we are a friendly destination, that we are a destination that has been around for more than 50 years dedicated to the service sector. Our greatest value is our professionals who serve tourists with that smile that is already an identifying sign of our tourist destination.” For this reason, Vega highlights that the first edition of the Santa Marta Canary Hospitality Awards “is a recognition for all those people who, day after day, are working in the service sector.”

 

For her part, Ciona Ramírez thanked Alejandro Marichal and Yilenia Vega for their commitment to supporting this event, “since without them I would not have been able to carry it forward and this has a very great feeling for me,” she said. “Santa Marta is not only the patron saint of the hospitality industry. Santa Marta has been among us since the 50s and 60s since the farmers, who when there was a good harvest it was distributed among the most vulnerable people," commented the member of ASEGO in the Canary Islands, who also highlighted, "the celebration of this festival of Santa Marta was done since tourism arrived in 1987 and lasted up to a week and distinguished the best in the service sector, but since Águeda Sánchez died, it was only a floral offering and a religious service. For this reason, I, who have been a governess for 35 years, involved my association ASEGO to recover this initiative and celebrate the XNUMXst edition of the Canary Islands Hospitality Awards of Santa Marta. San Bartolomé de Tirajana on the island of Gran Canaria, is the first island tourist municipality, offering 72% of the accommodation supply and generating 35% of the GDP for tourist services. For this reason, both the Department of Tourism and the municipality's hotelier associations have organized these events to commemorate Santa Marta and promote ties between hospitality professionals, residents and tourist-visitors with the City Council through the institutional dissemination of the promotional tourist actions of Maspalomas Costa Canaria.
