32 poisonous and invasive animals seized in Telde

MASPALOMAS24H Monday, July 22, 2024

Dangerous animals such as tarantulas and an extremely poisonous scorpion have been involved

They were located through social networks, where the owner announced their sale

The Civil Guard has investigated a person for a crime related to flora, fauna and domestic animals and another against collective security, for possessing 32 dangerous animal specimens in his home in Telde (Gran Canaria).

The agents have seized the animals, among which were some potentially dangerous, poisonous and invasive in the Canary Islands, such as tarantulas or scorpions. Of these animals there were species cataloged in the International CITES Convention.

The different species were housed in the private home of the person investigated, inside terrariums and various plastic containers, which lacked the minimum security measures that this type of animals should have. Especially the poisonous specimens -different tarantulas and a scorpion-, due to the potential danger that these species possess.

The Seprona of the Civil Guard learned that the person under investigation announced on social networks the possibility of purchasing certain animals cataloged in the CITES International Convention and potentially dangerous. Seprona immediately began an investigation due to the claim that existed on social networks, with the sale of these protected and dangerous specimens.

The person responsible for the animals admitted to the Civil Guard agents that he was the owner of different types of animals, including protected, invasive and poisonous specimens. Among them, there were species of arthropods such as tarantulas, African snails and an extremely poisonous scorpion; reptiles such as snakes, lacertids and turtles; and other types of animals and insects considered invasive in the Canary Islands such as Argentine cockroaches, tenebrios, tree frogs, a chinchilla and four rats.

After verifying the existence of the animals, the Civil Guard has seized the 32 specimens as their owner lacks the documentation that protects their legal origin and does not have the minimum security conditions in their storage.

The intervened animals have been deposited in the Cocodrilos Park animal rescue center in the town of Agüimes.

The person under investigation along with the procedures carried out have been brought to the judicial disposal of the corresponding Investigative Court of Telde in charge of the case.
