Tunte, for Día Santiago, in the economic capital of the Canary Islands

Dácil Santana Thursday, July 25, 2024

Tourism never stops but today it is Santiago de Tunte, patron saint of the municipality of Tirajana, which is home to the economic capital of the Canary Islands. The president of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, has chosen this Santiago Day to find space in Tenerife. On June 13, Clavijo was able to be in Moya, north of Gran Canaria, where all of his neighbors could fit into a hotel complex in the south of Gran Canaria.

Aside from the absence of Clavijo, who, it is true, must appear in the Parliament of the Canary Islands although he could surely have moved that presence to Thursday or Wednesday afternoon, he has not yet made an official visit to the south of Gran Canaria in this year of his mandate. , everyone who has power in the south of Gran Canaria is in San Bartolomé de Tirajana this July 25. And, in the south, he rules: AV-PP and CC, the local government pact that has overcome the vacation home crisis due to the employers' errors in 2023 of taking photos and attending electoral events by undervaluing CC.

The capital of the municipality is called Tunte, (the place of the canaries), a place name that dates back to the settlement of an aboriginal town with the same name, and the place where, after the conquest, various settlers of Hispanic origin settled. Tunte kept the name and became the capital of the Tirajanas, San Bartolomé and Santa Lucía region, a capital that its residents continue to defend today.

Tunte is located at the foot of the Morros del Pinar and next to the bed of the Barranco de Tirajana at 890 meters above sea level, it has been the administrative capital of the municipality since 1835. Its privileged geographical position in the heart of the Caldera de Tirajana has made it main crossroads of communications between the north and south of Gran Canaria, throughout history.
