Covid19 unfortunately brought good things and was the support of civil society for responses due to the lack of response capacity of the administrations. That was terrible in the south of Gran Canaria because the south of the island became an employment desert. Companies began to respond and continue to do so. This week chains such as Spar or Mercadona have shown support for the Karuna Maspalomas Charity Association as do many other companies in the island's tourism sector. This week Mercadona donated 1.000 pants for users who lack the means to buy clothes. Hiperdino also supports this program from its tax retroactivity agenda.
The companies, through the Food Bank, make regular donations of non-perishable food, as well as fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and other essential products to the association. Its main objective is not to generate food waste and to help families who are going through a vulnerable situation. Paco Molina, president of the Karuna Maspalomas Charitable Association, runs a warehouse provided by the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, where the association preserves and distributes food to the families that need it most in the municipality.
The Karuna Maspalomas Charitable Association carries out its work effectively when planning the distribution of food, carrying out exhaustive control of the expiration dates so that nothing spoils without being distributed. In addition, many users who have attended the association have remained as volunteers, creating a moving network of help. From that warehouse, the Maspalomas Rotary Club donated shelves for the storage of products and technical support to the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council. The Karuna Maspalomas Association was created last April 2020, seeing that the consequences of confinement were generating a considerable increase in families in vulnerable situations.
