Tirajana lifeguards continue to denounce lack of personnel

Cristian Sanchez Monday, August 12 of 2024

The group has been denouncing for months the lack of personnel to serve the entire coastal area of the municipality and demanding an improvement in infrastructure and working conditions.

The lifeguards of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, the main island and regional tourist engine with its beaches as its main virtue, continue to demand an increase in personnel to effectively cover the municipality's coast and a renewal of the necessary equipment to be able to provide their services.

With only 16 lifeguards for all the beaches of the municipality, many of them several kilometers long as is the case of Playa del Inglés, the group has been reporting for months that with the arrival of summer and the increase in influx on the beaches of the municipality has become unsustainable.

The group, through its spokesperson, Kevin Castellano, has stressed that the lack of lifeguards endangers both bathers and the staff themselves, who are overwhelmed by having to cover different points of the coast at the same time.

The collective's demands do not focus only on increasing the number of first responders, but also on demanding better working conditions and having adequate equipment to perform their functions effectively.

The situation has been at a standstill for months, despite Alejandro Marichal, the first deputy mayor, stating on Televisión Canaria last June that the government team was working to establish physical and salary improvements for the lifeguard service; just a few days ago the group demonstrated in Maspalomas along with colleagues from other municipalities under the slogan "Lifeguards with the water up to their necks" to denounce once again a situation they describe as unsustainable.
