The Perseids reach their maximum splendor in August 2024. Maspalomas, in the south of Gran Canaria, is presented as an excellent place to enjoy this astronomical event in multiple places such as Fataga or Maspalomas Dunes where there are areas that can be passed through. The midland area of the South of Gran Canaria is also an ideal place to observe the Perseids due to its low light pollution and its quiet natural environment. The clear and dark skies of this town offer optimal conditions for stargazing. The hospitality industry in areas such as Fataga or Tunte always has an excellent offer before heading to the natural astronomical points where you can enjoy this event.
What are the perseids?
The Perseids, popularly known as Saint Lawrence Tears, are a meteor shower that occurs each year when the Earth passes through the trail of dust and particles left by Comet Swift-Tuttle. These fragments enter the Earth's atmosphere at high speed, disintegrating and creating bright flashes of light in the night sky.
When to see them
In 2024, the peak of Perseid activity is expected to occur between the night of Monday, August 12, and dawn on Tuesday, August 13. During this period, under ideal conditions, up to 100 meteors per hour can be observed. The best visibility will be after midnight, when the radiant, the point in the sky from which meteors appear to emerge, is at its highest. Castillo del Romeral or surrounding farmland areas in the higher areas of Tirajana are ideal for a more secluded and quiet viewing experience. These latter rural spaces have very little light pollution, which makes them perfect places to observe the meteor shower.
Tips for better observation in the south of Gran Canaria
Choose a dark location: Look for areas away from artificial lights to maximize meteor visibility.
Bring a blanket or reclining chair – Meteor viewing takes time and patience, so being comfortable will make the experience more enjoyable.
Adapt your eyes to the dark: Avoid looking at bright lights (including mobile screens) for at least 20 minutes before observation to allow your eyes to adapt to the dark.
Be patient: Meteor showers can be unpredictable, so staying at your viewing spot for at least an hour will maximize your chances of seeing a good number of meteors.
Check the weather forecast: Make sure the sky is clear the night of the event for the best viewing conditions.
