In August 2023, the Environment Department of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria said that it had imposed a total of 2023 sanctions between January and July 120 for traveling and camping in non-permitted places in the Maspalomas Dunes Special Nature Reserve. And in 2022 there were 20 fines. In August 2024 nothing has changed and the zombie tourists and people from Las Palmas continue to wander around the Maspalomas Dunes with no control other than the good faith that may exist on the part of the visitors. It is assumed that the sanctions are motivated by the impact on a protected area with a level of protection that is one of the highest in environmental regulations, since damage is caused to the dune ecosystem.
Most sanctions are supposed to be 150 euros. In 2023, more than 15.000 calls were made, of which 322 resulted in penalties of 150 euros per head. With European funds, the installation of LED information screens has been carried out in the areas surrounding the enclave that have the greatest influx of tourists, who will be provided with information about the Natural Reserve, its values and the rules of behavior to follow in the same in different languages. And to all this we must add the new signage elements and intelligent tourist information points, which have a budget of 450.000 euros and which will improve the signage of the enclave.
