The Government Council approves a Temporary Execution Plan to develop projects estimated at 5 million
The implementation of a dozen key initiatives of the Tourism Sustainability Plans I and II is guaranteed
Actions range from a mobile application to the rehabilitation of trails or support for the local economy

The Cabildo will reinforce the development of the two Tourism Sustainability Plans in the World Heritage territory and the Gran Canaria Biosphere Reserve with the implementation of a Temporary Execution Plan that will involve the incorporation of thirteen professionals until 2027 to guarantee the execution of a dozen crucial initiatives valued at five million euros.
This was agreed today by the Government Council, which based its decision on the importance of Tourism Sustainability Plans I and II for the enhancement of the Cultural Landscape of Risco Caído and the Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria and the Biosphere Reserve as differentiated references of the island destination with products barely developed on the island and respectful of the philosophy of conservation and dissemination of the values of both figures, as emphasized by the advisor to the Presidency, Teodoro Sosa.
The planned degrees cover Architecture, Technical Architecture, Geography and Territorial Planning, Public Works Engineering, Anthropology or Sociology, Communication, Tourism, Economics or Business Administration and Management, General Administration and different levels of the administrative management, contracts for which a budget of 273.000 euros is contemplated.
The first Tourism Sustainability Plan is the result of an agreement between the Cabildo and the Secretariat of States for Tourism and the Government of the Canary Islands and involves the execution of 3 million euros by the Institute for the Integrated Management of World Heritage and the Reserve of the Biosphere of Gran Canaria.
For its part, the second Plan is supported by a direct subsidy to the Canary Islands Government Council from funds from the European Union's Next Generation Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. In this case, the Institute directly manages projects worth another two million, although their total amount rises to 8 million.
The actions within each Tourism Sustainability Plan
The three million from Plan I that will be managed through the Temporary Execution Plan include the implementation of the Long-Distance Trails, the adaptation, beautification and enhancement of the Cultural Landscape, the renovation and adaptation of the Interpretation Center of the Degollada de Becerra, the development of web portals and the mobile application, the support system for the management and preservation of the sites protected by UNESCO on the island, the Technical Office to support management and promotion and, finally, the promotion, revitalization and revitalization of local products and services.
On the other hand, the two million that the Institute must undertake are distributed practically equally between the cycling and pedestrian path connecting with the La Aldea de San Nicolás ravine, which will also entail cleaning and clearing tasks, and the adaptation of the trail network of the Gran Canaria Biosphere Reserve. In the latter case, paths that connect with the Long Distance Trails will be rehabilitated, with actions planned in La Aldea de San Nicolás, Mogán, Tejeda, Artenara, San Mateo and Agaete.
The philosophy that surrounds both Plans is directly related to the activation of the endogenous potential of the territory to promote the development of sustainable local socioeconomic initiatives and promote the attachment of the population to the territory and improve quality of life indices.
Likewise, both Plans respond to the need to stop the gradual closure of tourist establishments and the reduction of rural accommodation places and to distribute territorially the wealth generated by the sector, as well as to value, enhance and expand the offer with other complementary tourist resources, such as hiking, canyoning, cycle tourism or gastronomy, among others.
They also take on the challenge of conserving and protecting the landscape and cultural assets and goods linked to the Cultural Landscape and the Gran Canaria Biosphere Reserve, meeting the quality, accessibility, conservation, management and information requirements required by UNESCO and promoting the use of the supply of recreational and educational nature facilities found in the intervention territory, as well as containing the loss of the business network and employment opportunities.
Likewise, initiatives are proposed to improve the identification, commitment and sensitivity of the residents of the population centers located in the territory of intervention as a unique tourist destination, in addition to uniting and protecting the spaces accredited by UNESCO.
