The work, co-written with the genealogist, Juan Ramón García, and the graduate in History, Cirenia Hernández, delves chronologically into the different stages of settlement of the highest settlement in the municipality of Agüimes

The writer, historian and favorite son of Agüimes, Faneque Hernández, presented his new book, 'Temisas. Toponymy and family history', a work co-written with the genealogist, Juan Ramón García, and the graduate in History, Cirenia Hernández, which delves chronologically into the different stages of settlement of the highest settlement in the municipality. The presentation event, held in the Plaza de San Miguel, an emblematic meeting point for the residents of the place, was attended by the mayor of Agüimes and prologue of the work, Óscar Hernández, and the Councilor for Culture, Efraín González.

'Themis. Toponymy and family history' carries out a complete historical analysis from the year 1500, when the first repopulation occurred after the conquest of the island, until the present. The book consists of seven chapters in which the social and economic context is explained, as well as the most significant events of each of the centuries. In addition, it investigates the family tree of the families originating from Temisas, opening an interesting vein of knowledge about their ancestry.

The pages of the book also include the meaning of common words for the “temisenses” themselves – a demonym that Faneque Hernández prefers to use instead of “temiseros” to refer to the inhabitants of the payment. One of these words is the name of the neighborhood itself, whose meaning, according to the author's studies, is related to the blanzizals, the unique white mountains present in the area. According to Faneque Hernández, the root “temi” refers to the word stone, while the suffix “sa” refers to the whitish color of the rocks. “Uniting the meanings of both terms we come to the conclusion that Temisas means stone or white rock,” explains Faneque Hernández in a section dedicated to toponymy.

In the presentation, Óscar Hernández praised the research work developed by the authors, historians who honor their craft with their industriousness, going to the original sources to compile the information, extract the data and extract the details that form the raw material of this book . In this way they manage to reconstruct the valuable history of the small things, which make up the day-to-day events, of the common and ordinary life of Temisas. The first settlers settled here after the conquest, taking advantage of the knowledge and gardens of the indigenous population and fostering a mix of cultures that marked the imprint, character and personality of this unique hamlet.

The publication, published by CanariasEbook, is part of a project by the Agüimes City Council to compile the history of its different neighborhoods. This work dedicated to Temisas is the first installment of an ambitious series that will reflect the most relevant historical events of each and every one of the existing population centers in the municipality.
